#2739 e-Sword Resource Installation on a Windows PC

Posted by Mike_S on 23 October 2011 - 01:45 PM

Why not use 1, at most 2 archive types - .zip or .exe, no raw resources. I don't blame users for getting confused, add the archive types to the resource types, yikes!

What about using a uniform naming scheme. For example, the F.B. Meyer - Bible Readings on the Psalms Commentary could be archived as fbmeyer_psalms_comm_cmtx.zip, with the archive name, File Name: listed above the File Size: on the download page. If the user can't find the download they know the exact name to search for. The archive name also contains the resource extension type.

You could provide the details on the download page:

File Name: fbmeyer_psalms_comm_cmtx.zip
File Size: 489KB
Resource Name: psalmcomm.cmtx
Location: e-Sword Root Directory

The Location: could be a link to a Help page explaining the resource types and where they're located on the various systems, and how to extract the archives to the proper locations. Just one man's opinion :)

#2626 e-Sword download - raw resource...?

Posted by Mike_S on 16 October 2011 - 10:26 AM

Hi DSaw, thanks for taking the time :) and yes, I'm new to e-Sword, just tryin' to find the easiest way to break somethin' ;)

(what are you referring to as a raw resource) added

What I've gathered, these are file types native  to e-Sword ie; readable, maybe other Bible software as well. The types downloaded mostly are .bblx, .topx, .cmtx, .dctx, also referred to as raw resources. I would use native file types (extensions) personally. The e-Sword downloader downloads the raw file, .cmtx, and drops it in the e-Sword root directory, no extraction needed.

I only archive large files. The Gill commentary is ~31.6MB, 3+ hours downloading for me. If the file hasn't been updated I keep it close. When reinstalling, I extract the resource from the archive - done.

Now, if scripting was being performed with .bblx or .cmtx files, writing to the registry, adding folders or system files, then my method would fail, the routines would need to run. It appears the sfx files are designed for convenience for those unfamiliar with the process, for those more familiar, we like to monkey around, makes us feel smart, so we extract the contents to have a look.

Btw, there are other file types hidden off in a dark and lonely place - .jnlx, .notx, .lstx, .ovlx .prlx - journal notes, study notes, bookmarks, markup, and prayer requests. These extensions are usually small in size, essentially text files.

I know, most of you have fast connections, you read this and say "why does this guy insist on meddling, just click and download?". Well, you would have to sit and stare for hours waiting for a file to finish, like I do - I need something to do while I'm waiting :)

Seriously, I have to find ways to make the process as quick and painless as possible otherwise the time it takes really discourages me from bothering.

#2617 e-Sword download - raw resource...?

I'm on a slow dialup connection and it takes time finishing the larger resource files, thankfully e-Sword let's you resume a broken download. Note: You must start the download again, it will pick up where it left off, just not automatically.

My Q - e-Sword downloads a raw resource, yes? I've been raring the files when done, I'm hopeful I can extract the resource (*.bblx, *.cmtx, *.dctx, *.topx) again later should I reinstall e-Sword, is this possible? My e-Sword folder is already nearing 200+MB ;)

#2615 .zip formatt rather than .exe

Posted by Mike_S on 15 October 2011 - 06:33 PM

I know this thread is gettin' old but I figured I would post anyway.

A great tool for extracing Inno, NSIS etc is Lupo's Universal Extractor, a freeware portable tool that's designed for this very purpose. I tested on 2 files, one from Josh and Module Robot - piece of cake. :)

The tool has been updated recently:
1.6.1 Unofficial Revision 4 (31-08-2011):

  Updated 7-Zip to 9.22 beta
  Updated InnoUnp to 0.36
  Updated lzop to 1.03
There seems to be a stock error message stating some files couldn't be extracted, doesn't seem to miss the important files. The tool was developed to help create portable applications, some of the unneeded files, uninstaller, *.bin etc may be the files not extracted.

Anyway, it's always worked for me and it did with 2 files from BibleSupport :)

#2591 Modifying eSword's "ToolTip Font..."

Posted by Mike_S on 13 October 2011 - 06:14 AM

I bet the absence of these registry entries is why the popup box isn't accessible from within e-Sword for you. Now that you have the entries, try accessing the setting from within e-Sword? Just curious...

No, still no dialog box - see post #12

Adding "ToolTip Font Name" was not in the instructions provided.

True! If you look at the pic (listed '7)') in post #11 you'll see ToolTip Font Name - I assumed here.

So,
ToolTip Font Size looks to be Required.
ToolTip Font Name may not be needed ie, Optional. An experimental setting, may be superseded by another setting in e-Sword or possibly the OS...?

I guess I'm done with monkeying around with e-Sword for now. I'll come back to it later. I'm gonna give TW a try. I'm really disappointed that e-Sword is still mostly a text-based tool (very excellent) but lacks so much in the way of true interactivity. There are a few paid tools that have more bells and whistles, I might have to spend some money for what I'm looking for. I'll still have a look around the forums though, some good work going on in here :)

Mike

#2580 Modifying eSword's "ToolTip Font..."

Very cool, worked like a charm :) I did have to add both ToolTip Font Name & ToolTip Font Size, I had neither. I honestly can't tell if Times New Roman is what is in the ToolTip but it was what I chose. I have a readable font size, I'm happy. Still no dialog, I will add this to my list of e-Sword Tweaks.

Thanks guys for the input.

#2557 Mike_S sayin' hello...

Thanks Josh for the quick response, and the link to Tooltip.

I don't think I'll create anything as in depth as a Bible but I would like to create modules that are more dynamic than a Topic module. I want to create study modules that utilize links to Bible text (click the verse, opens in the default bible), maybe even add small graphics, not a graphics module per se'. I hope I can do what I'm imagining, basically something more than formatted text, using live links, and small images to add a bit of spark to an otherwise plain (or RTF) document.

The sources are varied, any source I can use (public domain of course). A friend of mine who is a pastor, author, etc, has online sermon notes, topical studies, I would like to try one of these to see how it goes. I've been given the green light that it is OK to use this material.

I'll download Tooltip and try it out. Btw, I might PM you if I get stuck. I would also like to see what templates you have, when I get there :)

#2555 Mike_S sayin' hello...

Hello :)

I'm sure like most of you, I really like e-Sword, what a great tool for study. I do wish it was a fully portable app though, download the .zip, extract, done - oh well.

I hope to be able to create my own modules, I'll ask questions about that in another thread I suppose.

In Christ,
