#8955 The Christian in Complete Armour

Posted by LarryG on 08 May 2012 - 03:53 PM

Three Dollars Worth of God
I would like to buy $3 worth of God, please.
Not enough to explode my soul or disturb my sleep,
but just enough to equal a cup of warm milk
or a snooze in the sunshine.
I don’t want enough of God to make me love a black man
or pick beets with a migrant.
I want ecstasy, not transformation.
I want warmth of the womb, not a new birth.
I want a pound of the Eternal in a paper sack.
I would like to buy $3 worth of God, please.

— Wilbur Rees

This work by William Gurnall is just a little more than some bargin for, thank goodness.  I hope you enjoy compiling this masterpiece.

#8953 Keeping your modules up to date

Posted by LarryG on 08 May 2012 - 03:40 PM

I added a column for date in Library Manager, which displays "Date Modified".
But note that changing tab name or description changes the "Date modified" of the file.

Thanks!  This is a great tool and I've used it to arrange my modules and rename many of my tabs.  I really appreciate your hard work and thoughtfulness in making this tool :)

#7965 e-Sword 10.1 Released

Posted by LarryG on 09 April 2012 - 10:08 AM

I think that's the most reliable way to do it. I have no way of testing the registry method.

But the e-Sword Downloader also should not work. If it does, you have not blocked e-Sword.

Yes, that's how I tested my firewall after blocking e-Sword.  As for the little pop-up...  I think that new products offered via eStudySource or advertised specials is what causes the pop-up function to come into play.   I could be wrong - I frequently am.  Time will tell, eh?

#7956 e-Sword 10.1 Released

Posted by LarryG on 09 April 2012 - 07:01 AM

There's a registry setting called "News Date" that records the last date an ad was shown (or a date associated with the ad). I think you could set that date into the future and e-Sword would not show ads. If I reset the date to the past, the Nelson's ad re-appears. After the ad shows, the date is in this setting is set to 2012-3-9. So if you set it to 2020-3-9, you probably wouldn't see ads until 2020. Most people have no business editing the Windows registry, though.

Each time e-Sword is started, it appears to poll IP address 208.67.58.170 (port 20480) to compare the date in that registry setting against the date of the latest news item. 5+ minutes into the e-Sword session, the ad appears. I didn't time it exactly but it is a while after the date is set backward and e-Sword is restarted. It appears the same IP address is used to download resources via the internal e-Sword downloader.

Thank you Josh for your reasoned explanation to what is happening.  It's good to know that the software isn't on some sort of internal clock, kicking up a pop-up every small span of time.   I've made several donations to Rick Meyers efforts over the years, along with buying four different modules from eStudySource.   Like Journey and many others, I also recieve the eStudySource newsletter trying to keep abreast of new products being offered.

I think I'll keep using my firewall to block access - it's simple, reliable, easily reversible and takes less than 2 minuets to set up.  You're 100% right about playing with the registry - not a safe playground for 'button pushers' such as myself!

@ Jonathon

re:  "I don't remember the statistics, but at the First BibleTech conference, Bob Pritchett implied that most copies of Libronix that were sold ended up as shelfware. He also said that the initial package that was purchased, was the only purchase that was made."

In the fall of 2002 I purchased the Libronix Scholar's Library for some really hefty price.  When I opened the box there was no instruction manual and calling Bellingham was less than useless.  I had spent several hundred dollars and was very unhappy.  You can imagine how thrilled I was upon discovery of classes offered on how to use the software - for an added price!  I still have the disks, seldom throwing anything away, but never use them: a waste and a lesson..

Rick has blessed the Church of Christ (intentional use of that phrase), Christ's Bride, so much with this software..."Do you see someone skilled in their work? They will serve before kings; they will not serve before officials of low rank."  -- Proverbs 22:29 (NIV)   I am totally convinced that God's eye does roam over the doings of men, observing and keeping track:  "Then those who feared the LORD talked with each other, and the LORD listened and heard. A scroll of remembrance was written in his presence concerning those who feared the LORD and honored his name. "On the day when I act," says the LORD Almighty, "they will be my treasured possession. I will spare them, just as a father has compassion and spares his son who serves him. And you will again see the distinction between the righteous and the wicked, between those who serve God and those who do not."  --  Malachi 3:16-18 (NIV)

As for e-Sword...   I mostly run with about 100-125 resources, but with Rick's new Reference Library window and Josh's expertise at creating good solid books it's easy to see that number growing.

#7249 Duplicate Bible Modules - Rotherhams Emphasized

Posted by LarryG on 20 March 2012 - 05:55 AM

A question:  Has anyone attempted to re-format these modules so that they become identical to the Rotherham Bible, emphasis markings, etc.?   Posting just the 'words' of the Rotherham Bible makes these really crippled (or empty) resources, in my opinion.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emphasized_Bible
Rotherham's Emphasized Bible (abbreviated EBR to avoid confusion with the REB) is a translation of the Bible that uses various methods, such as "emphatic idiom" and special diacritical marks, to bring out nuances of the underlying Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic texts. It was produced by Joseph Bryant Rotherham, a bible scholar and minister of the Churches of Christ, who described his goal as "placing the reader of the present time in as good a position as that occupied by the reader of the first century for understanding the Apostolic Writings."

The New Testament Critically Emphasised was first published in 1872. However, great advances occurred in textual criticism during the last half of the 19th century culminating in Brooke Foss Westcott's and Fenton John Anthony Hort's Greek text of the New Testament. This led Rotherham to revise his New Testament twice, in 1878 and 1897, to stay abreast of scholarly developments.

The entire Bible with the Old Testament appeared in 1902. Rotherham based his Old Testament translation on Dr. C. D Ginsburg's comprehensive Masoretico-critical edition of the Hebrew Bible that anticipated readings now widely accepted.

Rotherham's translation has stayed in print over the years because of the wealth of information it presents. John R Kohlenberger III says in his preface to the 1994 printing, "The Emphasized Bible is one of the most innovative and thoroughly researched translations ever done by a single individual. Its presentation of emphases and grammatical features of the original languages still reward careful study."

#6827 Poll: e-sword open source?

Posted by LarryG on 27 February 2012 - 07:02 PM

I agree completely with the last two posts and fit into the same category as a long-term user of e-Sword. I even feel somewhat guilty talking about this behind Rick's back. The bottom line is that it's none of our business. I give thanks that e-Sword is being used around the world for the Lord's Work. So, I also give thanks for Rick Meyers' work that makes it all possible.

Yes.

Honestly, I discovered eSword in the summer of 2002 at a friends house.  I installed it into my first computer in October 2002  -  one of the first programs that I downloaded and installed.   I feel as if Rick has given me a valuable 'gift' which I never asked for, but has become almost invaluable to my study of the Word of God.  When I look at eSword I'm just thankful.  That's all, just  thankful.  It's like a friend give's me an undeserved gift and then returns every 12 months or so, saying let me make this better for you!  Thankful and blessed!  I've added a few modules, but nothing like others have done.

Back on point:  I think it's possibe for men who self-identify themselves as 'men of God' to become over entangled with the technical aspects of Bible study, while missing the purpose totally.  An example would be someone who has a vast collection of Bibles in dozens of bindings, leathers, sizes, languages, etc. but is best known for their argumenitive attitude.   One Bible, well lived, would bless that soul more than all the technical knowledge they have about Biblical bindings.

#2164 An e-Sword Magazine, what do you think?

Posted by LarryG on 18 September 2011 - 02:39 PM

Logos was just one out of a million examples i could use. It doesn't matter if they are concerned or not, they cannot legally stop it anymore than Microsoft can stop a magazine about Windows.

Thank you, well stated!

APsit190  My thoughts are you should just do whatever God has put upon your heart to do and let the fruit of your intent determine it's veracity and wholesomeness.   There is a reason David, a man after God's own heart, loved Sauls son - 1 Samuel 14:6 - "...it may be that the LORD will work for us: for there is no restraint to the LORD to save by many or by few."

According to Josh, THIS is the perspective of BibleSupport.com:

Does this website speak for e-Sword or Rick Meyers?
No, BibleSupport.com is not affiliated with the official e-Sword software. No one speaks for Rick Meyers or for e-Sword except Rick Meyers. If anyone implies or insinuates they are speaking on behalf of Rick Meyers on this website, understand they are merely rendering their opinion.

#1832 Module Sources Question

Posted by LarryG on 01 September 2011 - 05:17 PM

If we create a forum where you can post what your working on IF you want to, would that solve this issue? Or no?  If you wanted to post as a courtesy, you could. And if you'd rather not post what your working on, then you would not. After all, we're all volunteers, no one is in charge of anyone, and no one answers to me for anything.

Would this work with 40,000 members (i.e. is this solution scalable)?  If this isn't the right fix for when membership grows, what would be the right fix?

Josh

No Josh, I don't believe you're out in left field - eventually something will be needed to keep track of resources being developed.

On a strictly volunteer basis, to open up a Forum thread....I don't know, it might work.  Is it scalable for a large community?  I have my doubts.   I'm not a prophet (regardless of my Pentecostal background - LOL), but this might be humble enough to actually work!   :)   Let's do it and let God decide.

#597 Limits on resources we host?

Posted by LarryG on 29 July 2011 - 07:56 AM

A short observation:

Are we re-arguing the entire reason for the Reformation?

If this site really reflects it's name (BibleSupport.com) then let's support what the Bible supports.  Christ alone.  Why should we even consider posting modules dealing with the Mormons, ancient philosophers, etc.   If people want those modules then they have every opportunity to construct them, just as the brethren have constructed these.

If we want the blessings of God upon this website, I suggest that we stick with His agenda.  What's that?  Preach Christ and Him alone.

However, if we choose to be 'all-inclusive' then I suggest to just fold up our tent today and go our own separate ways (2 Timothy 3:16-17).   We see through the examples of Israel how not following after God alone leads into all kinds of heartache (Judges and the Babylon captivity).  It's all about Jesus - is Jesus enough?
