We seem to have solved the problem. I uninstalled msxml3.dll from the command line, then reinstalled it from the command line using winetricks.  Problem solved!

FWIW, I uninstalled and re-installed 12.0.1. The installation threw an error message (which I may have missed on the previous installs):

 

Error 1904: Module C:\windows\...etc. \msxml3.dll failed to register.
