Brothers, We Are Not Professionals
A Plea to Pastors for Radical Ministry

John Piper pleads with fellow pastors to abandon the secularization of the pastorate and pursue the prophetic call of the Bible for radical ministry.

We pastors are being killed by the professionalizing of the pastoral ministry. The mentality of the professional is not the mentality of the prophet. It is not the mentality of the slave of Christ. Professionalism has nothing to do with the essence and the heart of the Christian ministry. The more professional we long to be, the more spiritual death we will leave in our wake. For there is no professional childlikeness, there is no professional tenderheartedness, there is no professional panting after God.

Brothers, we are not professionals. We are outcasts. We are aliens and exiles in the world. Our citizenship is in Heaven, and we wait with eager expectation for the Lord (Phil. 3:20). You cannot professionalize the love for His appearing without killing it. And it is being killed. The world sets the agenda of the professional man; God sets the agenda of the spiritual man. The strong wine of Jesus Christ explodes the wineskins of professionalism.

#24158 Collaborative Commentary on BIBLE from BIBLE Support Group

Posted by david psalms on 02 March 2015 - 12:56 AM

Dear Members and Visitors of the Site,

Greetings to you in the name of our LORD JESUS CHRIST. While i was meditating on BIBLE, this morning this thought flashed in my mind. Give a thought to it and let me know your view.

There is never an end to the knowledge or revelation one can obtain from meditating on scriptures. We already have plenty of commentaries, books on the website to refer from, as the helping aids in understanding scriptures. Each one of us come here either to download, upload modules. Very few are the original modules created by the members. Many of us take content from existing sources and making them into modules. All of us are doing our own BIBLE study with the help of downloaded modules. Each one of us are blessed with the SPIRIT of GOD to obtain fresh revelation from the scriptures as we dig them daily in our lives. The knowledge obtained either retained in ourselves or shared in closed groups, at times in open groups if any personal website was hosted on our name. The knowledge was not fed back to the system in my observation. it is like andaman & nicobar islands. thousands of tiny little islands with no attachment, but called under a single name. So much to count in number but weak in size and power. If all those island masses come together and join hands......

Today our group is very strong with member count more than 120,000 with believers and men/women of GOD. How about collecting our knowledge, experience and revelation on scriptures at one place on the site and creating a collaborative commentary on BIBLE from BIBLE support group?

  1. None of us as good as or as strong as our collective wisdom
  2. None of us will ever get complete revelation of a verse in BIBLE becuase it is not comprehendible by human mind. pieces connected together will give us the broad picture and helps us to humble ourselves before GOD.
  3. We can edify ourselves with the experiences of other believers. Even BIBLE encourages in ephesians to let the brothers dwell in unity
  4. So far commentaries were written in small groups or by one author. if such small groups and solo men can bless the body of CHRIST so much, think what kind of impact this large group can create for future generations.
  5. One may say it is messy if these many attempt to work on commentary. but if we let GOD take control nothing is impossible. we can come out of our denominational boundaries, self views and strive towards that notes that glorifies only GOD and HIM alone and no single person, organization or view. In my belief the true revelation born of GOD will be acceptable to all as we all accept JESUS CHRIST in common.
  6. We can keep refining the notes as we mature in our walk with the LORD and gain new insights into HIS scriptures. GOD said in HIS scripture that HE will counsel us with HIS eyes upon us.
  7. We will be leaving this as legacy to our present and following generation to feed on and get strenghtened in the inner man.

if we choose to work on it, we can work out a plan and bring better shape to it.

Regards

david.

Preface

Nearly twenty years ago I was asked by the Department of Education of the Church of the Nazarene, of which Dr. J. B. Chapman was then chairman, to prepare a work on Systematic Theology for use in the Course of Study for Licensed Ministers. I immediately set myself to the task but my range of vision was too narrow. I was constantly discovering new truth and each new discovery demanded a place in the plan of the work. Now after nearly twenty years of constant study and teaching, I am presenting to the church the result of these efforts in a work entitled Christian Theology. It is offered with a prayer that it may find at least some small place in the preparation of young men and women who look forward to the work of the ministry. I have no thought of attempting any new contribution to modern theological science. My purpose and aim has been to review the field of theology in as simple a manner as possible for the use of those who, entering the ministry, desire to be informed concerning the great doctrines of the church

Bresee, vice-president under Dr. E. P. Ellyson and then as president from 1913-1916. From 1916-1926, Wiley led Northwest Nazarene College as president. Foreword

IN our mind's eye we can see Dr. Bounds, in the early years of the twentieth century, walking the streets of his own little village, with his manuscripts tied up with a twine string, and written upon the backs of old circulars, used envelopes, kx)king for some one who would undertake to prepare the manuscripts for publication and asking of his friends to pray that God would raise him up a man that would bring out his writings, Claudius Lysias Chilton, a scholarly friend of Dr. Bounds, said, “ There is no man on earth to-day except the present editor who would have accepted this mass of matter and devoted the time to give it to the world— a world that will not begin to realize the magnitude and expanse of the work until editor, compiler and reviewers have been in eternity many ages.'

We take this occasion to offer our heartfelt thanks to the friends who have helped to compile, revise, rewrite and edit the printed and unprinted works of Dn Bounds. We thank Rev. Robert O. Smith, of Gainesville, Georgia, for introducing him to us in 1905, and pressing the matter upon us that we needed this apostolic man to teach us to pray and preach the Word. To one friend in particular— Rev. Clement C. Gary, of Atlanta, Georgia, — ^we owe the first expression of sincere gratitude for his part in this work. To him I am indebted for a vast amount of labour and study such as it can be the good fortune of few editors to receive from one so saintly and competent, occupied as he is by private and public duties. To Miss Ambrose, of Baltimore, Maryland, I am deeply indebted for splendid and correct stenographic work.

I here submit a few brief statements from Dr. Bounds' letters to me just before he died, which show his views of Satan ere he went far out of his reach.
''Washington, Go, Dec. 15, ipil: I am trying to give myself more and more to prayer.

Our only hope is in God. I do sympathize with you and pray for you and hold you in loving affection. Rejoice that you are well situated. God save you from your buffeting devil. The devil is a great help heavenward.

The worse agents he has the better we will get on.”

“ Washington, Ga, July t, ipi2: Pray more and more; keep at the four a. m. hour. God will be for it; the devil against it. Press on, you can't pray too much, you may pray too little. The devil will compromise witfi you to pray as the common standard, cm going to bed, and a little prayer in the monrfng. Hell

will be full if we don't do better for (k)d than that.

Pray, pray, pray, pray always^ rejoice evermore, pray without ceasing, in everytiimg give thanks.”

It is barely possible that I have escaped making many errors involving so many examinations and rewriting so many pages in his published and unpublished works, but I still hope that many souls will be edified and made holier and more devout by the reading and that God will receive additional glory when Bounds' complete works have been given to a needy world.
