#2083 An e-Sword Magazine, what do you think?

Posted by Josh Bond on 15 September 2011 - 09:25 AM

Blogging platforms have (and will continue to) largely replace the modern magazine, Wordpress in particular. There are magazine templates for Wordpress that make it full fledged electronic magazine. For content, you may have to go beyond the "what's new" and into "how to" and tutorial types of articles, otherwise you might run out of things to say? I haven't thought it through, that's just thinking out loud.

Tell ya what, if you start your magazine here in the blogs, I'll display the entries on the front page and re-arrange the blogs section to make your e-Sword magazine stand out from the other entries, including a tag cloud of your entries. :D  If you wanted a stand-alone site, I would personally choose Wordpress if it were my project.

#2072 Linking to BibleSupport.com - Webmaster's Toolkit

Posted by Josh Bond on 14 September 2011 - 09:57 PM

I've made a few banners and buttons for people lately who wanted to link to BibleSupport.com. I thought I'd make a post summarizing all the options and code for those wanting to link to this site or include data from this site. I'll add a link to this post from the "About" menu.

Linking to BibleSupport.com
To link to BibleSupport.com using a graphic, copy and paste the code below into your website. Or, save the graphic to your computer and create your own link.

File Name: Machen, J. Gresham - Origin of Paul's Religion (The Classic Defense of Supernatural Christianity)
File Submitter: Josh Bond
File Submitted: 14 Sep 2011

File Category: Topics
Author: Gresham Machen
e-Sword Version: e-Sword 9.x and above

The Origin of Paul's Religion (1921) is perhaps Machen's best known scholarly work. This book was a successful attempt at critiquing the Modernist belief that Paul's religion was based mainly upon Greek philosophy and was entirely different from the religion of Jesus.

Machen writes a masterful and forthright defense of the historical truthfulness and supernaturalism of the New Testament. This volume is taken from the James Sprunt Lectures delivered at Union Theological Seminary in Virginia. Reprints of this book sometimes add the subtitle "The Classic Defense of Supernatural Christianity".

Machen refutes with the anti-supernaturalism that was beginning to dominate the church in the early decades of the twentieth century. Although written 85 years ago it remains a model of biblical scholarship and warm piety.

"In an age when the nature and content of Paul's message are once again under scrutiny, evangelical and Reformed readers will benefit immensely from a close reading of Machen's masterwork. This book is an outstanding example of careful, patient scholarship that received high praise when it was first published and continues today to demand attention."
- R. Scott Clark

"J. Gresham Machen not only believed, practised, and proclaimed Paul's gospel, he was also able to defend its authenticity at the highest scholarly level. Because 'The Origin of Paul's Religion' penetrates to the heart of the matter it continues to speak to contemporary controversies over the nature of the gospel and the Christian faith."
- Sinclair Ferguson

Amazon.com Reviews
J. Gresham Machen produced an amazing response to liberal scholarship surrounding the topic of the origin of Christianity in the lectures contained in The Origin of Paul's Religion. Machen meets scholars on their level to refute mistaken notions about the origin of Christianity; he is thorough, well read, and clear in his arguments. As far as relevancy, Machen's lectures may as well have been delivered last year. Machen delivers a stirring apologetic supporting the supernatural origin of the religion of Paul, and in turn Christianity. The church will always be under attack and we must be grateful for men like J. Gresham Machen who have defended it to the end.

One of Machen's more academic works as a biblical scholar. This is a thorough treatment of Pauline theology in response to modernist biblical studies (higher criticism, comparative religion, etc.). Thesis: the "origin" of Paul's religion consists in the historical facts constituting the redemptive gospel of Jesus Christ. He refutes modernist interpretations of Paul that cast him the light of naturalistic comparatives on the one hand, and moralistic spiritualism on the other. Rather, Machen argues, through the variety of his ministry, Paul preached the revealed and properly supernatural message of Christ crucified, died, buried, resurrected and ascended for the redemption of all those who are united to Christ and his righteousness through faith. This work is significant as a defense of historic Protestantism equally as engaged in biblical scholarship as the contemporary modernists in Germany and elsewhere.

#2037 Trying to delete TSK from e-sword

Posted by Josh Bond on 13 September 2011 - 11:20 AM

Quick and Easy way:
In e-Sword, from the main menu, click Options. Then click Resource. Deselect a resource to hide it. Right click a resource and confirm to physically delete it.

More Info on Your Way
If you manually delete a file from the e-sword folder, it should be gone. And it probably is. The problem may be that you have the TSK resource multiple times in your e-Sword folder but under different filenames.

There are 2 folders that e-Sword can read resources from:

1) c:\program files\e-sword

2) your mydocuments folder > e-sword
On my computer, this looks like this: C:\Users\Josh\Documents\e-Sword  but on your computer, your file path will be different because the user name probably isn't "Josh"

Nevermind, Dr. Dave says its required by e-Sword and will magically reappear. So, hiding it is probably your best option. This is definitely another good thing to add to the e-Sword User's Guide...

#2013 What do new members download first?

Posted by Josh Bond on 12 September 2011 - 07:21 PM

Why do people first find BibleSupport.com--what file are they looking for? There's no definitive answer. But here's a clue. I queried the BibleSupport.com database, which logs just about everything everyone does. I searched for the first file that each member downloaded after signing up.

So when you see the Pulpit Commentary below, the 754 number that follows is how many members signed up and then downloaded the Pulpit Commentary. I think it's fair to conclude that, more often that not, the files below are the reason the member signed up because it was their first download.

This editor doesn't support tables, as far as I know, so the list below is a little hard to read. You can download the PDF file that has the data in clear tabular form:

#2005 e-Sword File Naming Conventions

Posted by Josh Bond on 12 September 2011 - 01:02 PM

e-Sword File Naming Conventions

The purpose of this document is to establish a standard convention for the naming of user made e-Sword modules.

Definitions

What does the term “raw file” mean?

Raw files are the modules that are used by e-Sword to display something.  For the purpose of this document the term “raw file” will include only these 15 user creatable module types- .anlx, .bblx, .brpx, .cmtx, .dctx, .devx, .harx, .lstx. .mapx, .memx, .notx, .ovlx, .prlx, and .topx.

What does the term “executable file” mean?
This term refers to the files that our users download, and then execute to install the downloaded module into e-Sword.

What does the term “BibleSupport.com Resource Name” mean?
This term refers to the name of a resource as displayed by the BibleSupport.com website.

What does the term “tab name” mean?
Tab name refers to the name e-Sword displays on the tab for any given module.  Currently, Bibles (.bblx), Dictionaries (.dctx), and Commentaries (.cmtx) appear as tab names. In this document, we refer to these resources as the Tab Modules Group.

How does e-Sword sort modules for display?

e-Sword always sorts and displays modules by the raw file name.  For the tab name to be sorted alphabetically, it must correlate with the raw file name.

The Conventions

Convention #1- Raw File Names

  • All raw file names must be no greater than 250 characters in length, including the file extension.
  • The white spaces in raw file names of the Tab Modules Group may be filled with “_” underscores.
  • All raw file names of the Tab Modules Group must begin with the tab name followed by a dash and then the name, or simply be named the same as the tab name, as in the following examples.
Example:

KJV-King James Version.bblx
-or-
KJV-King_James_Version.bblx
-or-
KJV.bblx

  • All raw file names of the Non-Tab Modules Group must begin with the author’s last name, followed by a comma and the followed by the first name or initial (if known) and middle initial (if known), followed by a dash and the name of the book, article, sermon, etc., as in the following example.  All white spaces should be left unfilled.

Example:

Reisinger, EC - God's Will, Man's Will and Free Will.topx

Convention #2- Executable File Names

  • All executable file names must be no greater than 250 characters in length, including the file extension.
  • The white spaces in all executable file names must be filled with “_” underscores.
  • There will be no punctuation in any executable file name, only alpha-numeric characters are allowed.

Example:

reisinger_ec_gods_will_mans_will_and_free_will.exe
   -or-
kjv.exe

Convention #3- “BibleSupport.com Resource Names"

When uploading a file to BibleSupport.com, you must specify a "Resource Name". A reminder of the preferred syntax for the Resource Name is shown on the Upload screen. The syntax is: Author last name, Author first name - Resource Name.

Example:

Evans, William - What Every Christian Should Believe.topx

(or .zip or .exe)

Convention #4- Tab Names
The decision on the naming of tab names is really left to the module creator.  However, for standardization we recommend the following guidelines.

  • Keep it short!  Long tab names take up valuable real estate.
  • Capitals are always a good rule.
  • Be concise; avoid including conjunctions like “and” or “for”, or demonstratives like “the”, or prepositions like “to” or “on”.
  • Always try to use the most commonly known abbreviation, if there is one.
Example:

Name of Bible-The Authorized King James Version
Tab Name-KJV

Convention #5- Tool Tip Content
Verse references should be tooltipped. Brent Hildrebrand's Tooltip 3 will automatically tooltip your verse references or you can use another tool. As an indicator of the importance I place on Tooltip, it was the 4th upload to this website!

#2004 Member Titles and Positions

Posted by Josh Bond on 12 September 2011 - 10:46 AM

First, let's talk Member Titles and then we'll talk about the Module Superhero opening.

Member Titles
Currently, our website software automatically sets member titles according to your number of posts. Members begin as a "New Member", after 10 posts their title changes to "Member", and after 30 posts their title becomes "Senior Member".

I override member titles for Moderators, Resource Builders, Utility Developers, and for myself. :)

I want your opinion on what member titles should be? And how many posts to reach the titles? One idea I had was "Defender of the Faith" (whatever that means) instead of "Senior Member"? What about "Prayer Warrior", "Disciple", "Servant of All", etc. What titles should we use, what should the hierarchy be, or should we just leave this as it currently is?

The current software setting is after 500 posts, members can change their own title. Should we keep that? Should we lower that number? Should we let anyone change their title after X posts?

Module Superhero Needed
We need a person (or more than one person) to make the e-Sword module library consistent:
  • Remove duplicate entries
  • Double check copyright status
  • Insert an author in the listing if none exists.
  • Copy and paste the Table of Contents and/or preface from the e-Sword module--or-- copy and paste a third party description of the work, such as Amazon.com or Wikipedia.
  • Occasionally review other websites with e-Sword modules to see if module updates have been released.
This would be a long term project, workable at your leisure and free time. There would be no "expectations" on quantity--you're a volunteer and work as little or as much as you prefer, even if it's just a few a week.  If more than one person wants to help with this project, that would also be most welcome. I am currently working toward this, but there's only one of me...

And your title could be "Module Master", "Module Superhero", "Module Librarian", or whatever you want. I just put "Module Superhero" to grab attention for this post. :)

#1999 e-Sword Utilities - Database2RTF (Convert TheWord to RTF)

Posted by Josh Bond on 11 September 2011 - 06:28 PM

File Name: Database2RTF (Convert TheWord to RTF)

File Submitter: Josh Bond

File Submitted: 11 Sep 2011

File Category: e-Sword Utilities

Author: Josh Bond

This utility was primarily written to help convert TheWord modules to RTF for conversion into e-Sword format. Also, there is no way to easily correct mistakes in user-created modules without editing the database directly. This utility helps address both issues by converting e-Sword® and TheWord® databases back into RTF documents that you can edit in Microsoft Word, Wordpad, or Brent Hildebrand’s ToolTip. A “÷” sign is placed before each entry, by default. This makes the document compatible with ToolTip (see the section on Databasesdata.xml for more information on configuring this program).

File Extensions - TheWord, e-Sword 9.x
This program automatically detects the type of TheWord or e-Sword 9.x database you are attempting to convert to RTF based on the file extension. The Word extensions are: gbk.twm (topics/books), dct.twm (dictionaries), cmt.twm (commentaries). e-Sword’s extensions are: .topx (topics), .dctx (dictionaries), .cmtx (commentaries), .notx (study notes). If your file extension is wrong, this program may not work properly.

Special Instructions for TheWord:

Before converting a TheWord module, follow the instructions below so this program can read the module:

1. Load The Word.
2. Right click module tab of the resource to convert.
3. Choose Module Properties
4. Click Settings/Actions Tab
5. Tick User Module (can be edited) box
6. Untick Module is compressed box.
7. Scroll to bottom of window. Look for the Actions: “Select an action to perform and execute” box. Choose Convert module content to RTF. Follow the prompts. Press the OK button to exit the screen and save changes

e-Sword 8
If you wish to convert an e-Sword® 8 module (Access database format) into an RTF document, use the e-Sword® converter to convert to e-Sword® 9 format (SQLite). Then you may use this program to convert that database module into an RTF file.

Fonts
This program does not always detect the original fonts used because of the variety of ways modules can be made. This program will output Greek/Hebrew characters as Titus Cyberbit Basic and the main text font is usually "Times New Roman". If you would like the main text font to be another font (like "Georgia"), edit the DatabasesData.xml file. Look at the second line, beginning with "<DATABASES header=". Locate "Times New Roman" and change the font.

I admit, this is not an ideal way to handle this. The complexity of the way e-Sword and TheWord handle headers plus my lack of time to spend on this project after I started BibleSupport.com makes this a "is what it is" situation.

Limitations of This Program and RTF
This program simply outputs the contents of database modules to an RTF file through a glorified copy and paste routine. An occasional module may contain invalid RTF formatted text (this is rare, and seems to happen when an image was present in the original text before the module was created).

This text displays in e-Sword®/TheWord® properly, but word processors (like Microsoft Word, or Tooltip) are much less forgiving and will not open the file. This is usually caused by an unmatched { or } symbol. This situation can be remedied by manually locating the offending symbol and removing it.

Encrypted Modules
This program does not read encrypted (or premium) database modules. Attempting to convert an encrypted database module will result in garbled text.

DatabasesData.xml
This application is highly configurable. If you have a little technical expertise, you can edit "DatabasesData.xml" to control what to export (what tables, fields, the layout of the data, whether a "÷" symbol or some other symbol appears, etc.) For example, I frequently modify DatabasesData.xml to show only the verses in a commentary. This way, I know which verses have comments in a small commentary. The SQL statements this program uses can also be edited in the DatabasesData.xml file. So if the database module structure ever changes, this will probably not require an update to this application (only to the xml file).

Platforms:
Tested on Windows 10, Windows 7 64; Windows Vista 64; and Windows XP, Service Pack 3.

#1883 BibleSupport.com Bandwidth Growth

Posted by Josh Bond on 05 September 2011 - 04:55 PM

The Lord continues to bless our outreach, as shown by our bandwidth numbers below. Most of our stats are visible from the front page of BibleSupport.com--total number of files downloaded, total members, new members today, etc. One stat that isn't provided is our server bandwidth.

Bandwidth (in this case) refers to the amount of data sent by our server in a one month period (data sent to our server is another number). This data, or bandwidth, is measured in Gigabytes. (A gigabyte equals 1,000 megabytes. A CD holds about 650 megabytes. A DVD holds about 4.5 gigabytes.)

As you can see from the chart below, we're serving a LOT of e-Sword and MySword modules!

Posted Image

September, a partial month, is also shown above. With less than 5 days into September, and 10 gigs a day so far, we can estimate that September will exceed 300 gigs by month's end.

We're averaging 650 unique visitors per day (a visitor is counted only once per 24 hours, regardless of how many times they visit our site). Our traffic is coming from these sources (these numbers are totaled from the start of the site):

#1833 Converting TheWord Book Modules to e-Sword Topic Modules

Posted by Josh Bond on 01 September 2011 - 09:04 PM

Prerequisites:  I assume you know what a file extension is, you know what a database is, your comfortable importing and exporting files, you understand what a file is, your willing to Google "installing Microsoft Word macros", and that you have a general level of PC skills proficiency. This is not a 1-click conversion solution. This is not "easy". I would expect only a handful of people would try these steps. Perhaps someone one day will write an application that performs these steps after the new Topics implementation arrives in e-Sword 10.

Don't Convert Bad Modules- Please be careful of the modules you convert. Make sure the formatting is readable and pleasing to the eye. For example, please think twice before converting something that's unreadable (see first image). I would rather have 50 usable modules, than 500 modules people will rarely use because of the quality. When we release poorly formatted modules, we are not doing e-Sword or BibleSupport any reputation favors. And don't think I'm picking on TheWord here! e-Sword has its fair share of poorly formatted modules too!

bad_formatting.png

Required Programs:
TheWord
Sqlite Browser
Microsoft Word

Steps:
1. Open TheWord. Right click on a Module Tab and click Module Properties.

2. Click the Settings Actions Tab. Uncheck the Module is compressed (to save disk space) box (see screenshot below)

3. Select Convert Module to RTF from the drop down menu at the bottom of the screen and click Execute Selected Action (see screenshow below).
manual_settings.png

4. Open the word module with Sqlite Browser, click the Execute SQL tab, and paste the SQL code below these steps into the window. Click Execute Query. The database itself is converted.

5. With SQLite Browser still open, click on the Topics Table. The Title field should be in the same order as presented in TheWord program. But e-Sword requires the display order to be alphabetized. So, manually edit each field and number the titles in the order they should appear. You see a wide variety of e-Sword numbering systems in Topics files. See the screenshow below.
example_topic_ordering.png

6. TheWord uses RTF hyperlink verse references. e-Sword uses a "tooltip" verse reference system. When you see "Matthew 3:1" in e-Sword or TheWord, there's different text behind that reference.

In TheWord, the behind the scenes link is something like this (there's a variety of styles TheWord uses):
{\field{\*\fldinst HYPERLINK "tw://bible.*?id=40.3.1|_AUTODETECT_|"}{\fldrslt \plain \f2\ul\fs20\cf2 Matt. 3:1}}.

e-Sword's "Tooltip" Reference looks something like this:
\cf1\ul Mat_3:1\cf0\ulnone

You should not leave TheWord hyperlink references in your e-Sword file. For one reason, Tooltip will sometimes crash when trying to parse TheWord verse references. Another reason is that the text may look fine now, but if the e-Sword developer switches to a real Hyperlink reference system, then suddenly TheWord's references may start appearing in your e-Sword resource.

7. To convert TheWord verse references to e-Sword tooltip, you will need to install the Microsoft Word macro below.

8. In SQLite Browser, click File > Export >  Database to SQL File. This generates a text file with SQL commands. You do not need to understand them.

9. Load the text file into Microsoft Word. Run the macro you installed in Step 7. On large files, Word may become unresponsive. For really large files, this might take 10 minutes!

10. Save the text file in Microsoft Word. Do not save the file as a Microsoft Word file! Save it as a text file, the same as it was when you opened it.

11. In SQLite Browser, click File > Import > Database from SQL File. Choose the text file you just saved in step 10. Choose a new database filename for your topics file when prompted by SQLite Browser.

12. Your verse references should be tooltipped, but if they are the wrong color, you can either modify the RTF header color specification...or just run the module through Tooltip. Did TheWord module not have verse references? Some don't. Use this roman numeral conversion macro to convert roman numeral verse references to digits so you can tooltip the file.

SQL to Execute in Step 4
Costas is obviously very good with relational databases and SQL. I know just enough to get by. This code is very close in 99% of topic files. But an occasional topic file might have a few topic titles slightly out of order. You will have to number the topic titles anyway for e-Sword.

Microsoft Word Verse Reference Macro for Step 7
You don't absolutely have to use this Macro. See Step 6 for the reasons you may have to. This VB macro code isn't pretty. It was quick and just enough to get the job done:

#1790 College Press Commentary Set (1950's/60's Version)

Posted by Josh Bond on 31 August 2011 - 05:24 PM

They sent a cease and desist notice on the Collete Press NT Commentary that was publicly distirubted.

So we need permission, which I have asked for...and if they say yes, we can make a module using the Old Green Commentaries and post it here.

#1759 What Modules do you want for e-Sword

Posted by Josh Bond on 30 August 2011 - 10:28 AM

Josh,
I thought the cut off for copyright was 1923?  Am I mistaken?

Oh that's right it is 1923. I haven't looked, I presume the proper and timely copyright extensions were done to keep it under copyright. If so, looks like it will be public domain in 2021.

Moffatt is pretty controversial anyway, both then and now from looking at the google results.

#1555 Upgrade Complete: Report any broken items

Posted by Josh Bond on 22 August 2011 - 10:02 AM

The upgrade is now complete, and everything should be fixed. If you see any broken links, broken features, odd formatting, or missing functionality, please report them in this thread. Before reporting something, make sure you have pressed F5 to refresh your browser to make sure you are seeing the latest version of the site.

Here are some legacy screenshots of the site before the upgrade. I took them so I could remember how I had things assembled. Now they're just for the record of how the site looked previously.

Other than any issues you find, it's on with the business of e-Sword module creation and distribution!
