#28109 Any Plans for Editing K&D?

Posted by Josh Bond on 01 July 2016 - 05:59 PM

I have the K&D text in a large RTF document that can be edited with ToolTip and a module generated from that. But I think what you're asking for is changes to the way e-Sword handles versification, which can't be accomplished through editing the module.

Hmmm. Thanks for your suggestion.

I think I understand your suggestion, but I'm not sure it is possible to correct the hundreds (or thousands) of errors there are in the text "manually". It's not like the verse reference links in K&D are incorrect. If a user selects Options | Scripture tooltips ... | Old Testament | HOT, or another Hebrew language version of the OT, then the links in K&D will point to the correct verses in Scripture tooltips. The problem is the versification difference I mentioned. I think e-Sword needs a means of recognizing the versification type of each Bible resource and Commentary resource, so that when a user selects Options | Scripture tooltips ... | Old Testament | KJV, then e-Sword itself will automatically make the adjustment in versification needed so that the commentary verse references point to the correct verses via the Scripture tooltip in whichever resource a user wants to use.

If what you say is correct about K&D being "locked up" (and I have no reason to doubt that what you say is true) that's too bad. There are many other typos and incorrect formatting error that could possibly corrected manually.

I think what I'm suggesting is something that needs to happen at the next major upgrade in the entire e-Sword application and resource hand-shake. For that reason, this may need posting on another forum.

Thanks again.

#27256 e-Sword ToolTip Tool NT

Posted by Josh Bond on 10 March 2016 - 10:31 PM

"that works but when I tool tip it produces ÷÷Gen_1:1-31"

Ah - don't tooltip it.

2 ways:
1) Select "No Chapter tooltips" on the tooltip tool bar.
and/or
2) in setttings, set DoNotTooltipMarkedLines to 1

You might consider changing DoNotTooltipMarkedLines to 1 as default. I can't think of a reason why someone would want marked lines tooltipped. Those lines don't show in e-Sword, so it makes no difference to the reader. And any errors will get reported by ToolTip during the generation of the module.

#27178 Bible Support Website

Posted by Josh Bond on 26 February 2016 - 12:14 AM

We're not formally connected with e-Sword or Rick Meyers, so we don't know what premium modules are being developed.

If we (BibleSupport users) had more modules in development, a short list on the front page would be a good idea. But we seem to have completed the most sought after public domain projects. I base "sought after" on user suggestions--for years, we had a list of texts people wanted, many of them multiple volume commentaries. We completed each one. I'm not aware of anything currently in development, although someone could be working on something. This also doesn't mean there's nothing worthwhile left to do--it just means that the larger, public domain projects that people were the most vocal about have been completed (as far as I know).

I agree definitely on the video instruction. The PDF for the Tooltip tool is probably in it's last written version and future documentation for this tool will be in the form of YouTube videos. I'm also thinking of making a general introductory video to e-Sword because a lot of people stumble into this website having never heard of e-Sword or any Bible study software. It would help reduce the number of emails we get from people confused about how to read the modules.

Edited: 2/29/2016 for clarity, specifically to clarify that not all worthwhile projects have necessarily been completed.

Hi. I'm new to the forum.

I'm reading a book from here called

Foster, Rupert C. - Studies in the Life of Christ

Just want to ask if i can be sure there are no copyright issues with this book.

I like the book, although i dont agree with everything.

Just want to make sure its not copyrighted.

Thanks beforehand.

Hello,

Looking back at my notes on this project: The original publication date was between 1923-1963. The copyright was not renewed and the renewal exemption didn't apply. Therefore, it's public domain.

#26382 Biblesupport 2.0 - Your Feedback

Posted by Josh Bond on 09 November 2015 - 11:05 AM

Hello everyone,

I wanted to get your feedback on how the next version of this website might look.

Background

This website runs on software called IPBoard (or IPS), version 3.x.

The 3.x version of the software is at the "end of life", meaning we either need to upgrade or we're left with unsupported software that's susceptible to hacks, attacks, and exploits.

The "upgrade" to 4.x won't be a normal upgrade. Because Invision (the makers of IPBoard) made terrible decisions with 4.x, the "upgrade" is more like a complete conversion to another product! Because of this, the look and feel of this website will have to be re-coded.

When I install 4.x, the default is:

  • Front page will be gone--a blank page. What you see there will be re-coded.
  • Forums look like this.
  • Downloads look like this.

Apple Modules

I'm going to build-in support for Apple modules, so that the file listing will say "PC, Apple" if both modules are available. And I'm thinking of having the PC and Apple versions available within the same download (similar to how we do it now). Your feedback is welcome here too.

Your Feedback

Since I'll have to re-make much of the site anyway...you can be honest! Now is the time to speak up if you have a design viewpoint. I have a few ideas, but I don't want to bias anyone's opinion with my own.

  • What don't you like about this website?
  •
  • Would you keep the front page basically the same? What would you change? Should the Downloads front page be the site front page?
  •
  • What would you change about any part of this website?
  •
  • How would you better present information?
  •
  • What information would you present? (or not present?)

One of the biggest criticisms of this website has been it looks like a Library. And it's overwhelming. What can we do to change that?

Thanks,

Josh

#26034 New International Commentary on the New Testament

Posted by Josh Bond on 23 September 2015 - 10:40 AM

I can't get the Hebrew to render in this commentary either, no matter what font e-Sword uses (default, or otherwise).

Also of interest is the tooltipping. When a verse is dissected into a, b, or c, the verse tooltip doesn't show, i.e. Php_2:7c or Rom_8:4b. The letter should be moved away from the verse for the tooltip to activate in e-Sword.

Looks like a good set, though, especially at this price.

#25343 Problem with www.biblesupport.com on iPad

Just FYI: There was a problem with this website for a short time until I saw this post. It only affected mobile devices. I was able to replicate on my iPad and Droid phone. It's now resolved.

#25220 BibleSupport down

Posted by Josh Bond on 27 May 2015 - 02:11 PM

Unfortunately,  I forgot to renew the domain name and they changed the DNS to get the domain holder's attention. (And yes it did get everyone's attention!). This made the domain name direct away from this website to an expired notification website. Changes to DNS are not instantaneous--they can take up to 48 hours to propagate across the internet (in all geographical locations). Thus, even after the domain was renewed and the DNS was properly restored, it still took some time for everyone to see this website again.

Sorry about that!

Link to Dr. Dave's "Fred Wight" search, to save you the trouble of searching.

Disabled the useless, legacy version of the module uploaded by Module Robot. All that should be left now are good versions.

#24963 PLEASE Develop e-Sword for Linux !!! Post here if you want it.

Posted by Josh Bond on 02 May 2015 - 10:27 PM

I COMPETELY agree that premium modules are a must, or I would lose interest in the project yesterday :o

You should ask Rick that question before you get too deep into this, if the project hinges on reading premium modules. Premium modules are encrypted. It would surprise me if Rick provided a third party developer the ability to decrypt the premium modules.

I forgot that the Apple modules are unencrypted. I guess your first decision has been made for you. You will need to have your Linux program read the Apple modules, since the premium and official PC modules are encrypted.

#24811 download wording

Posted by Josh Bond on 24 April 2015 - 11:54 PM

Zip - You install the module

Exe - Auto-installs the module

cmtx - The actual module, uncompressed, you install it.

Go to Chapter View on most commentaries to view all verse comments for that chapter.

#24708 search engine

Posted by Josh Bond on 15 April 2015 - 11:36 AM

Rather than relying on pure html files, I think you need to find a Content Management System (CMS) to put this into. This would leverage off-the-shelf functionality for both organizing/dividing content and searching content. I think your going to have to learn PHP.

If you wanted an "offline" program, you would have to code that for each platform you want it to run on. I think I'd stick with the online version.
