The built-in STEP reader displays the file names.

On my setup, it doesn't read the content of the files.

 

Is this a configuration error on my part, or does e-Sword on Linux not read the file content?

To read the contents in STEP,  go to Tools > STEP Reader.

 

In this new window, click File > Open (or click the little yellow folder icon).

 

In the lower right-hand corner of the little window that opened, set it to STEP Data Files (book.dat).

 

Now double-click one of the readables listed, and you should see something like book.dat. Double-click that to open the readable.

 

Close the little window, and you should be able to navigate within the readable to get where you want to read.

If I've done this correctly, the attached images show what happens when I select book.dat and volume.ini.

 

On the left hand side item names are listed, but the content is not displayed in the right hand side.

The STEP Version and encrypted/not encrypted status is displayed in the bottom right hand side.

 

I'm trying to figure if I misconfigured something, for that content to not be displayed, or if e-Sword on Linux can't read the file content.

Hmm. I see the same thing until I double-click one of those titles on the left (your first and third images). Just clicking it once doesn't show anything at first, but I would imagine you've tried double-clicking them.

Otherwise, you might uninstall and reinstall the program. See if that kicks things in.

I hadn't double clicked them.

Sometimes a single works. Sometimes it needs a double click. Sometimes it needs a triple click.

 

In e-Sword 12.10 STEP responsiveness is slightly better than previous versions, but it is still inconsistent in the number of mouse clicks that are required.
