Greetings all,

Did a biblesupport site search for running e-Sword on Linux, but stuff's a bit old after the first hit.

So, I understand you can run e-Sword in Linux with WineHq or something like that, but what I'm wondering is if I do so will it retain all of my downloads (Bibles, commentaries, etc.)? Is there a way to save the configurations and download information so that it isn't lost when you close Wine? (I've never run wine, so I'm in the dark there.)

Any input on how to do this as well would be great.

Thanks much.

Hello,

You can run e-Sword either in Wine or PlayOnLinux. It looks very close to e-Sword in Windows. It retains everything just like in Windows. You don't lose anything. I run e-Sword and theWord in Wine 4.1 on Linux Mint 19.1 (although I must admit I don't use e-Sword very much now. Almost all my work is done in theWord). I have over 30 Gb of applications in both programs.

Darrell,

Thanks! That sounds good. I'm running Mint 19.1 as well. For me, there will be no data-saving (I do all my notes in LibreOffice), but I didn't want to loose the downloads.

Do you know of a few good videos and/or tutorials for both Wine and PlayOnLinux with regard to e-Sword (or just in general)? I'd be interested.

Thanks much.

(TheWord, eh. Hmm. I ran across Xiphos in Linux, but I've not heard of TheWord.)

This tutorial should work How to install e-Sword in Linux using Wine

https://www.tentmake...e-tutorial.html

But I think most newer versions of Linux have wine by default. I am using Linux Mint 19.2 https://easylinuxtip...ot.com/p/1.html

and the newest E-sword as of today.

But to get the E-sword Module Downloader to work on Linux I had to install msxml3.dll  in /home/yourusername/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32

I copied msxml3.dll from my Windows OS (I used dual boot) but you may be able to get that online too: "Download and install MSXML 3.0 from Microsoft. This is the official source of the msxml3.dll file and will replace a missing msxml3.dll file, hopefully fixing any related DLL errors." https://www.lifewire...-errors-2623821

I think i helps E-sword to connect to the internet so that you can download the resources.

Been using e-sword on Linux for years now and it works 90-99% as well as on Windows.

I've also had errors with msxml3 and msxml6 in the latest e-Sword under wine. I think I fixed them by running winetricks msxml3 (and then winetricks msxml6).

A reminder for Linux users: the latest e-Sword uses window theming, which in my case made the program's window partially invisible. If you also have this issue, go to the Options menu, then App theme, and choose None.

I used Play on Linux which uses WINE for years. You can install E-sword and then backup the files:
go to your home folder then your user then find

.PlayOnLinux

PlayOnLinux's virtual drives

and maybe

.wine

Hey all:

I have run E Sword on Linux using PlayOnLinux and WINE for years but I found a better way recently.

I have installed E-Sword on two computers running Linux Mint. Here are the steps i followed:

1. See “How To Install Virtualbox 7 On Linux And Create A Windows 11 Virtual Machine” follow video instructions https://www.youtube....ll&index=1&t=3s

Be sure to press “enter” when this shows up to boot from the iso

(might need to do step 6 https://easylinuxtip...virtualbox.html if windows does not install.)

2. Shut windows down then do steps 6-11 from

https://easylinuxtip...virtualbox.html

( if step 9 does not work, read below)

Quick note: the guest additions is the package that contains all the virtualbox drivers to allow the operating system to work correctly in the virtual environment. (https://pureinfotech...s-11-virtualbox )

You can experience true 3d acceleration, screen size selection, and many of the other great benefits that come with using virtualbox guest additions, like shared clipboards and file sharing from host to guest and back.
