Hi,

Using e-Sword 11.2.2 on Mac with Wine Stable 4.0 and it runs great, but the fonts are not rendering properly (none of them).

 

Does anyone have a fix/suggestion?

Are you running the windows version on a Mac or E-Sword X which is the mac version?

Yes I do. Use e-Sword x. Its been built for Macs, and that's the whole point of it.

 

I'm running the Windows version (personal preference)

Just doing something based on your "personal preference" or whatever thing you want to go on, and so having problems with it is craziness taken to an extreme.

 

I don't know if you realize this, e-Sword X was purposely built so that Mac users like you don't have to go through issues similar to those you are experiencing.

Thank you e-Sword Tools Developer. While I appreciate your opinion, e-Sword X has some issues, and I do not feel the need to justify to you my choices.  Perhaps you are defensive and are one of the developers, at which point I would be happy to describe to you the GUI and the compatiblity issues with e-Sword X (in another forum, not this thread) so you could improve your product. Until that time, I stand behind my right to make choices about what I use.

 

In fact, if you are a developer, perhaps the question you should be asking is, if there is a version available for Mac why would someone choose not to use it?  I would gently suggest that this may be a more productive question for you.  

 

So thank you for offering your very strong opinion, which was not helpful.  If someone else has an answer to the question that I actually asked, without disrespect and without sarcasm, then I would thank you in advance for helping to solve this problem for me.

Could you instead run e-Sword on a virtual machine on your Mac? I suspect that may better emulate a PC than Wine. You should find some free options out there...

Thank you for responding. I will consider that.

 

I am actally not that technical or familiar with these issues, and found WINE through suggestions on other threads. One advantage, I've read, is that the Wine vs. a VM is not as demanding on system resources.  Everything seems to be working very well on Wine so far.  It seems quick and functional. I have no complaints. Just the font rendering issue.  That's why I was reaching out for help. eS is the only windows program I'm interested in emulating in the PC environment at this time.

Update:   I tried to delete this post as it seems a little non-productive and I didn't like the snarky tone of the original answers, which is not the type of disrespect I would expect to find in a forum like this,  but I couldn't.  

 

But what I can do, if I do find a solution to this problem, I will come back and post it here for everyone's benefit.  (Perhaps after the bugs have been worked out of the newest versions).  Thank you

I was not being snarky with my first answer to you, I intended to follow up after you responded but another member of this site chose to offer his help and I deferred to him. With regards to the fonts issue you might try copying or installing windows fonts directly on to your Mac 

You can move the fonts using the following steps:

1. To export the fonts from Windows:     Open Fonts by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking Appearance and Personalization, and then clicking Fonts.
2. Click and drag the Fonts you want to export to your Desktop or another folder
3. Copy these fonts to a flash drive to move to the Mac

 

You might also try as an alternative to Wine a program called Crossover MAC from Codeweavers:

I am not using e-Sword anywhere near as much as I used to.

I run both Windows and Mac and I find that the font rendering in wine/crossover office leaves a bit to be desired.

I think the fonts appear to be anemic in appearance.

 

I use two solutions (maybe three).

 

1) I do have e-Sword-X for the macOS.

It's only ok. I prefer the layout options available on the windows version better, but if I simply need quick access to an e-Sword resource on the Mac then e-Sword-X works. (no font issues).

 

2) My second solution (one I use more often) is to run the Windows version in a VM-Windows 10 session. 

The VM software of choice for me is Parallels. It's Windows so no font issues.

The other reason to use a VM is another of my favorite Bible software programs sells their Mac version which is actually the windows version under Crossover-Office. This is where I have experience with the weak fonts.

 

I have found that the software is more acceptable (but not perfect) if you increase the font size slightly. It gives a bit more body to the font thickness and makes it more readable.

 

3) My third solution is to run e-Sword on an actual Windows machine and access it via remote software. I use TeamViewer for that as you can get a free license for personal use and they have both Windows and macOS clients.

This solution works quite nicely and again it is running on real Windows.

p.s. Bumping up the display font size works for my "Other" software (which is WORDSearch Bible) I do not knos if it would be acceptable under e-Sword but should able to be be easily tested.
