I have open and closed e-Sword a number of times to see if re-starting the program would help. It has not.I have also renamed the Hitchcock's Bible Names folder so that it appears after the New and Complete Dictionary, but that does not change anything in e-Sword proper.
Can anyone help me? Is it me or the file?

Check your C:Program Files - e-Sword folder. If you have two of the same modules: they will conflict with one another. How to check if it is the same is remove one of them (Hitchcock's Bible Names in my dictionary) to my Doc. then open up e-Sword with Hitchcock's New and Complete Dictionary of the Bible.
this might help you.
Thanks

The files have different names but apparently the same data inside. When I removed the Bible Names Dictionary from e-Sword, Hitchcock's New and Complete Dictionary of the Holy Bible.gave me the same presentation as the Bible Names Dictionary that I had been using.
I had just assumed that they were two different works by Hitchcock. :-)

Your note was helpful to me for another reason. I had totally forgotten that we can eliminate an undesired reference without deleting its file. That should prove helpful to me in the future/

This sounds like a Virtual Store problem.
Win7 uses a shadow folder system (typically referred to as a Virtual Store) that can be difficult to work with. Win7 likes to create copies - unbeknownst to us users - in the Virtual Store folders (which are very hard to find). I think, though, that eSword can defeat this Win7 Virtual Store issue. Try this:
- Store the new file on your Desktop.
- Open eSword. In the "Options/Resource..." area, right click the .dctx you want to delete, and delete it. This should delete it from the Virtual Store area, too.
- Close eSword. (At this point, I recommend restarting Windows, but this may not be necessary.)
- Reinstall the new file from your Desktop.
See if that takes care of the problem.
