Hi,

I have been thinking about porting and modding e-sword or mysword to linux, so it can be ran on eink based e-readers like Kobo and Kindle, which have the possibility to run custom firmwares (KOReader is an example of custom software). Transforming it into a dedicated portable Bible study device, with e-ink screen and long battery life.

I'm absolutely sure it is possible.

You might want to contact Rick Meyers who is the developer of E-Sword and ask for his permission and approval before doing anything with the e-Sword software.

And if not and just go ahead and do it, you could get one of those ugly and terrible cease and desist notices, and/or a visit from the FTC agents ending up in a place where you really don't want to be.

I meant to say that perhaps the developers are interested in this project and if they want to port the software. The software is not open source, so I can't mod anything, even if I had the skills.

Had another look at what you said, and thought it would be interesting to see if how one could actually go about this without breaking any laws, and here is what I've basically found out, and hope it proves helpful to you.

 

So, when it comes to running e-Sword on another platform, such Kobo and/or Kindle readers cannot be done by porting or natively due to the CPU type and that, Kindle in particular, uses Android. Kobo has its own Firmware OS. That said, when it comes to e-Sword HT (which is for iPad), and e-Sword LT (which is for iPhone), I am aware there are emulators available which can run iOS software on Android devices. As to whether or not you have to pay for them, or that they are free I can't tell you. That you will have to find out for yourself.

 

With regard to Kobo, from what I can gather, there are no emulators you can get for them.

 

Now with all of that kind of information, with regard to getting e-Sword for Android, at the moment Rick Meyers remains unconvinced about putting an Android and Linux version out. So if one wants to have e-Sword on these devices and platforms, then you got to go through all of this rigmarole to get it done.

Sorry for not knowing your name. So there is no chance of eSword on Android? MySword is very poor by comparison. on top of that i have commentaries devotions sermons articles on over 6000 verses that i have developed over last 7 years. I was thinking of investing in a Pixelbook but would not be able to run eSword.  not sure if a windows emulator may help. any advice would be most welcome.

Have you looked at the Microsoft Surface Pro? That keeps you in Windows where e-Sword works. I have a Surface Pro. It's not much thicker than an iPad, has a detachable keyboard that is also a screen cover. It's become my Windows-based "iPad".

If I had a Surface Pro, I wouldn't. Assuming that you have a Windows desktop PC, and that you have a Windows Surface Pro Tablet, the portability and interchangeability  between devices is the same. The fact that you don't have a change in the Operating System, what you run on your Windows Desktop, you can run on your Surface Pro tablet. On on that note, you have the best of both worlds.
