Did he say he was blind?

No.

However, based upon the questions/comments/etc I've been reading, people stick with 8.x, or 7.x for one of the following reasons:
  • Resources that they have been unable to migrate to a new version;
  • Accessibility related issues;
  • Specific functionality in the version they used, that was removed in later versions;

You didn't mention some other reasons:
  • People thinking upgrading is a very difficult technical process.
  • Plain laziness.
These are the ones I meet most. :-)

Carlos,

That's been my experience too. The resource break between 8 and 9 reinforced the myth that upgrading is hard. And it's unfortunate that a database change had to happen but it needed to be done. But now the heavy lifting is over--all resources have been upgraded and if one lags behind, a post here would resolve it.

I have sympathy for people with blindness. I understand that one. But disabilities represent maybe .0001% of the people that don't upgrade. For the rest, I see no valid reason to stay with 7.x or 8.x. I don't even see a reason to stay with 9.x, but I'm being patient on that for now. :D

My reason for not upgrading from 8.X is I have many resources that 9+ will not open. Is there any conversion software that will fix this?

Hi Dennis,
Yes there is, and actually its a real little doozy of a program, and makes conversion a real breeze.

The program is called "eSword9Converter" and if my understanding is correct, it is available here to download. I've used it to convert my modules after getting the 9x version of e-Sword. The only thing is that it will not convert password protected files unless you know it.

Blessings,

OK - so at the cost of being called "Lazy" - or thought of as "stupid-technologically challenged..."

I have 2 computers - desk top & laptop
So I have "2" different study note files - - Is there a way to join them together (merge) - or is it a lost cause.
I am on the road 3 to 5 months a year - a LOT of different notes in each one.

And I tried once before to convert - shortly after v9 came out - and it did not go well.
I have bbl files that would not convert...
It also has been a while since I last tried.

SO MAYBE - overlooking shallow & short sidedness there JUST COULD BE other reasons besides
  • People thinking upgrading is a very difficult technical process.
  • Plain laziness.

The first rule of upgrading is: don't convert what already exists.

Make a list of Bibles and other resources you use. Some may be available for download within e-Sword. Others may be here on the website. You cannot convert copyrighted or official e-Sword modules--or modules that were sold by e-Sword or eStudySource. Those must be re-downloaded within e-Sword.

Afterwards, you can make a list of modules you really need to convert. That list probably won't be very large.

You can merge your study note database files. The problem may be if each module has a comment for John 3:16. I think only one would show then. I think you can open both databases in Microsoft Access and merge them that way.

Did he say he was blind? Outside of that, I can't think of a reason to stay with 8. People usually stay with 8 out of comfort, familiarity and being a little intimidated by upgrading. Even Rick doesn't support 8 anymore, Jaws or not...

Josh

I still use version 8 mainly because of two reasons:

  1. The TVM dictionary does not work with the latest version. (For me, at least.)
  2. The layout works better with my small screen.

On the side of that I like the way the verse memorizing tool functions in version 8 too.

I am liking the idea of this "BeST", as it is hard to find modules for version 8.
