Is there a way to view a commentary as you would look at a book? I'd like to see it page by page (or Bible chapter by Bible chapter) rather than linked to each verse or viewable only comment by comment.

No there isn't.

I'd like to see it page by page (or Bible chapter by Bible chapter) rather than linked to each verse or viewable only comment by comment.

To view a commentary chapter by Chapter, click on the C button, to get a book overview of a commentary, click on the B button.

That said, its important to note that not all commentaries are verse by verse, and that some are actually a chapter by chapter commentary which has a verse by verse commentary, e.g., the LANTC (Life Application New Testament Commentary) and the BBC (Believer's Bible Commentary), just to mention a couple.

Thanks for your reply. I am looking in the commentary by Jamieson, Fausset and Brown. It must not be organized by chapter. The Book button gives me an introduction to the book of the Bible I am linked to but there is nothing there in terms of a chapter over view under the Chapter button. But this is not exactly what I was looking for. I imagine that if I had the JFB book in my hands I could open to a page that had comments on, for instance, Matthew chapter 2 and I could read down the page and see comments on each verse. That's the kind of "view" I'd like. Is that possible with such a book? I tried reading JFB into ToolTip and it would not read it because it is a licensed book.

It depends on how the module was made.

A feature was added to e-Sword as described...

e-Sword version 10.2

Scripture references in the Bible view having associated Study Notes will now display a wavy underline to denote such.

The Reference Library now has automatic Bookmarks for every article. The Graphics Viewer also has automatic Bookmarks for each module.

Most Commentary modules do not contain specific Chapter Notes, so for those that do not the Chapter Notes mode will now display all of the Verse Notes for that chapter. This is very convenient for viewing those commentaries that have very few or very brief notes.

The Constable commentary module works with this feature.

Other Bible software like Bible Analyzer, can display any commentary module verse level comments for any chapter, and includes the chapter notes at the top.

Jon - I had forgotten that feature. Nice.

Unfortunately, many commentaries have chapter level comments, so this feature won't work on those. But a good example is Barnes' Notes. Those comments are only verse by verse. So, when you turn chapter level comments on - you get the entire chapter at a time.

Just what you're looking for, Gary.

Hi Gary,

For something like that to happen a new "view" or text display feature would have to be added into e-Sword; perhaps something similar which is seen in the text editors (See Screenshot below).

[By the way, this screenshot is pretty old, and taken in my old Windows XP machine].

Currently the way text (and graphics) are displayed in the the Bible, Commentary, and Dictionary views/Windows are in a normal TextControl component, which does not include a "book/page" type display. For something like that to happen, Rick would have to buy a more expensive TextControl which would give a kind of realistic book display. These controls aren't cheep. In fact are quite expensive. And as for opensource ones, I haven't even been able to find one that one can use. So freebies like these are as scarce as hen's teeth.
