How many resource publications do you have active in your eSword library? I'm asking this to find out why I'm experiencing a slow-down, or even a 'Not Responding' while a scripture or word search is compiled across my library.

Is there anything you would suggest to boost eSword?

I've got 5 Bibles, 79 dictionaries, 60 commentaries. I don't use devotionals, or other resources, and I've cleared out all repeated publications

Like I say, I could tap on a strongs reference number in a scripture and then have to wait about a minute or more to finally get results. This is the case on my good spec PC, moderately spec'd laptop, and Windows Tablet. The time spent pulling together the references is the same across all three which leads me to think that it's possibly just the nature of eSword?

I have a blog post at my website about this very issue. Go to "Accelerating the eSword Experience" by clicking here.

I have 244 Refx files

             44 Mapx files

           306 Topx files

           109 Bblx  Files

           100 Dctx Files

           132 Cmtx files

             20  Devx files

               8  Harx  files

               5 lexx   files

But then I have been collecting them since 2002 (or there about).  I have also made it a point to "weed out"  modules from to time.

I'm running Windoze 10 with 4 gig of ram dual core.  I don't get all that much lag.....but then I don't actually load most of the modules every time I power up.About 30 of each Bibles Commentaries and Dictionaries, since those are the ones I use most often.   The others are specialty research

eSword is written in the now abandoned language called Visual basic 6. Microsoft deprecated it in 2008. Many companies still have existing code in vb6 but every year there is less and less and less. Compared to modern languages vb6 is obsolete.

VB6 was never known for speed. It's a slow language designed to help beginners learn to program. That is why Microsoft started VB. The language is like using training wheels. You gain ease of use but lack severely in coding options and optimization. Combine that with poor memory management techniques +  best practices coding violations =  sluggish software.

This is also the reason why eSword has a dated look to its interface. The newer and more stylish controls with larger buttons and easier to read elements exist for modern languages. But new controls  are not being developed for VB6 anymore with a few exceptions. The sequels to VB6 was .Net VB and .Net C#. But C# now dominates. Its widely rumored that Microsoft will drop .Net visual basic all together. Either way, VB6 code is not easily converted to .Net C# or .Net visual basic when dealing with thousands of lines of code.

In a nutshell: eSwords developer can only do so much with a deprecated and abandoned language. Dont expect too much.

I've tried Dave's suggestion and it did perk eSword up a little, but much of the problem does seem to lay with the VB architecture of the program, as explained above.

My only option for a more fluid performance seems to be the suggestion to cull even more modules, deciding on which I need most.

My method of research is to go to the scripture, pick out the word I want to investigate, then just tap on the Strong's reference. After this I'll read everything that has been lit up as being pertinent.

It's a little bit more laborious having to check word usage as opposed to Strong's reference as not all the modules will use the same word considering the diversity of Bible versions they could be based upon.

I shouldn't complain really, at least we have tools like this that brings all these resources together, and the Bible does say we need to dig, search, and ask. So, getting a grip on Bible teachings work is to be expected. :-)

There is/was an e-Sword utility program called Smart-Starter.  It is still listed here http://www.biblesupp...art-starter-v2/

It allowed you to set up several different start up arrays.  For example if you were studying an OT scripture, you could set e-Sword up to load only resources that you preferred to use for OT.  Like loading Brown Driver Briggs but not Thayers, not loading Bibles that were NT only and so on.  It was very flexible in that you could set up any available resources, name the configuration and evoke the one you wanted when and as you wanted it.

It has not been up dated since 2010, so I don't know how well it currently works, but it is an old friend that got lost in the shuffle, so I think I'll give it a try to see if it still works.

About Smart-Starter, how do I add modules to the Workspace I've created? None of my modules are listed and there is no option to go to their location.

It has been years since I used it  fighting to recall this for myself.

The author eventually issued an ID that registered the program It is F53A.

If/when I figure out how to set the various workspaces, I will let you know.  Perhaps an old hand who did not stop using the program might remember the how to's.

Another program that you can try is Resourcer
