Hi all,

I am looking for the best dictionary for a guy who does not know Greek/Hebrew and does not have time to learn right now.  Preferably it would work well with the KJV+ that came with e-sword or similar that would be available as a download. I am ok if it is a premium module.

I saw a recommendation for AMG’s Complete Word Study Dictionary on a google search, however, it does not appear to be available anymore to purchase.  I downloaded the BDB/Thayer/Strong TVM but it looks like it was designed to work with a KJVTVM Bible that is no longer available.

Any help you guys and gals could give would be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Dave

EDIT- I know see AMG’s Complete Word Study Dictionary for download.  Is it worth it or is there better options?

Dodson Greek-English Lexicon (for the literal translation of the root) Dodson

Thayer's Greek Definitions with KJV occurrences (for idioms  and has also a KJC) Thayer-KJV

BDB with KJV occurrences (for the Old Testament) BDB-KJV

Niobi aka Patchworkid's Study Bible Dictionary (Teachings) (used Strong+ and a  KJVTVM dictionary) NSBD(T)

Modern Literal Version Concordance, Dictionary & Lexicon 2016 (has also a RMAC) MLVDC+G

Concordance to the Greek Scriptures (for searching  Greek words) GRC

There is no perfect dictionary. So I suggest to look in all named dictionaries and to look in the context of the verse and similar verses.

Mr. Lawson,

The AMG Dictionary (made famous by Spiros Zodhiates) is worth the price. The dictionaries mentioned in the above post are all good; but the AMG dictionary surpasses them for original language research. Add that to the fact that all you'll need to do is click the Strong's #, and you get right to the correct root word. For eSword, this is the one dictionary for this kind of work.

Let me encourage you to find and download the Greek New Testament Bible "TRi" (available here) and use it in conjunction with the RMAC dictionary (available within eSword's dowloading system). The Greek language is verb intensive. The TRi NT has extra codes in it that allow easy research into verb tenses, especially when used in conjuction with the RMAC. If you really want to look into original language, verb tense is almost as important as root words.

Happy hunting!

NOTE: The AMG dictionary is tied to both the OT and NT. I wanted to mention that since my comments were all specific to the NT, but it's OT comments are also "best available" for eSword OT language work.

Thank you both. I downloaded the "TRi" and RMAC as suggested and will get the AMG when I get back from vacation. I will also look at the others listed.

practice doing word study by studying the references.   Unless you understand how the word is used, you essentially spin the wheel and choose whatever meaning you like. Tools are not 100%.  Also I found Hastings and McClintok helpful as well. Of course there is nothing wrong with taking tools and doing a quick study either.    Greek and Hebrew courses cannot help determine the correct usage of  a word.   Katoog is correct as well.  BAGD is helpful and advanced.  however, I do not think it is in module format for e-sword.  you have to post and request and article from someone who has it in their software.  Feel free to ask for assistance in this area.
