Hello all. Is there a way to turn the tool tips on for the TNE toolbar? If not, a legend of sorts, or a picture denoting the toolbar button functions? Thanks - Bob

Hi Bob.

What you ask for is already there. look for the little speech balloon at the end of the second row of icons.

Highlight each verse separately and click the button. The editor will format the verse reference as a tool tip.

Note. The way e-Sword works, tool tipped verse references are simply specially formatted text. You can type the reference in that format and

e-Sword will recognize it as a verse reference without having to use a special tool.

a proper 3 letter book name, followed by an underscore, followed by the chapter, followed by a colon, followed by the verse.

The link does NOT have to be underlined, nor does it have to be green in color. Those two features are to make it stand out as a reference when you are reading.

joh_3:16 will work fine.

A Strong's link is a left angled bracket followed by a capital H -or- G followed by the proper number followed by the right angled bracket.

Again e-Sword will automatically recognize it as a Strong's number link.

<G1234> -or- <H1234>

Again the color of the text has no bearing other than to make it stand out while you are reading the text.

Hope this helps.

Roy

Hi Roy,

Just a bit of a correction, which may save on using "symbols," regarding Strong's Numbers: Using the Less Than/Greater Than (< >) are not required. Just typing e.g., H1234 or G1234 will suffice. I realize that using the < > symbols prior to (from memory) version 8 was important then, of which (again going by memory) didn't include the G and H with them, but were distinguished by italicized numbers for Greek, and normal numbers for Hebrew, e.g., <1234> and <1234>. The H and G distinguishers were added during the version 8 series of e-Sword, thus doing away for the need of these symbols, and Italicized numbers.

Hi Roy and APsit190. Thank you for your responses. Apologies that my question wasn't as clear as it could have been. What I'm really asking is how to determine what function a given toolbar icon serves when clicked upon. I suppose I can just click and see what it does. I'm just used to apps that show a tool tip stating its purpose when hovering over a toolbar button. This functionality doesn't seem to exist in any aspect of e-sword, and I was wondering if I missed a setting.

And thanks for the tip for tool tipping verses on the fly. I've been using the ctrl+j combo after selecting the text., which has it's advantages, but I think I'll give that a try. It seems like it would be faster to merely insert an underscore after the book name.

Just wanted to update...a reinstall solved the problem. Tool tips now appear. Thanks!

Hi Roy,

Just a bit of trivia as to the reasons for those changes. I think what caused this to be able to be done in e-Sword back then (and of which is still in practice done now) I think it may have been due to the changes Microsoft made to the RTF (Rich Text Format) code in 2007. (Click here to download if you are interested to read about it.) It wasn't all that long after when e-Sword 8x came out with those changes.
