This is a finale from a year long conversation (thread here), a lot of experimentation and reading, and improved software. It was not this easy when I started, but things have gotten better with time

Older information on Linux/eSword installs has outdated information that will only cause headaches and failure.

The following instruction set was using Xubuntu 14.04.2, released February 19, 2015 which can be found here

 

 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

 

In the menu (clicking on the little mouse head icon in the upper left hand corner of the screen),

go to "Ubuntu Software Center"

type "PlayOnLinux" in the search box

select it, then click "more info"

check all optional add-ons and click "Apply Changes"

click "Install"

be patient

open your browser

go to http://www.e-sword.n...s/setup1040.exe

and download the file

in the menu go to "File Manager", then "Downloads"

find the "setup 1040.exe" file

right click on it (not left click),

select "Open with Wine Windows Program Loader"
 
be patient

The eSword Installer will appear

click "Next" and proceed as usual

Only in the case of one being Right Handed, but not for those of us who are Kack Handed who've changed their Mouse button setting like I have done it.

I have to say the term "Kack Handed" was foreign to me so I looked it up via Google-

cack handed (TOP DEFINITION)-
It means an awkward or inept way of doing something; originally meaning left handed, stemming from cultures that use their right hand to eat and their left hand to wipe their behind.

cackhanded (definition 2)-
Someone who is cackhanded is lefthanded, and hence a clumsy fool who can't write or use a knife and fork properly.

Perhaps you are a comedian in New Zealand, but the joke loses flavor as it passes over saltwater?

I have to say I am also at a loss at your creatively critical remarks on my posts about Linux and eSword. I don't understand if you are attempting to be funny, or are critical of Linux, or something else perhaps?

My question: Will this run on 2GB Ram and an Atom processor?

 

I am running Windows 8 on it and E-Sword locks up,

 

Are you familiar if Xubuntu/wine runs enough lighter to make a difference?

 

maybe even put the Libraries on an external USB drive?

 

I love E-Sword and I'm willing to sacrifice all Windows functions to get it to work on this new device.

Which Atom processor?

 

It should work, but I'm a little curious about your Atom processor running Windows 8... Is this a Netbook or a Slim Client?

 

Another thing to consider is a "dual boot"; This is keeping Windows 8, and installing Xubuntu on a partition...

 

In the next day or so I'm going to be working on a Netbook with an Atom processor and 1GB RAM (2GB will be ordered soon). It currently has Windows XP. I'm going to partition the hard drive and install Xubuntu 32 bit. If you'd like, I'll step it up and do the install Friday and let you know how eSword does.

Okay, 2 Netbooks, both have Atom processors, one with 1GB RAM, one with 2GB RAM-

 

Xubuntu 32bit with "PlayOnLinux" installed. eSword installed fine and runs fine.

 

ONE IMPORTANT NOTE- be patient; don't crowd it when you start eSword. When you start eSword, it will take a little time to come up.  I noticed this moreso with the little Netbooks.

Xubuntu 16.04 came out 4/21/2016. And with it the "Ubuntu Software Center" was replaced with just a "Software" interface.

There is no "PlayOnLinux" that can be installed from the new interface.

Rather, open a Terminal window, then type

 

sudo apt-get install playonlinux

 

Enter your password, then follow the prompts.

 

Then, to get everything functioning correctly, follow this for "Winetricks" http://www.biblesupp...-wine-on-linux/

FYI - 

 

I'm pulling my endorsement for Xubuntu 16.04; this includes anything based on it like ChaletOS 16.04 and others. There are just too many issues, bugs, problems, headaches, and nonsense.

 

Xubuntu 14.04.4 works fine. It is supported till April 2017.

Another worthwhile distro for the casual user is Zorin. Zorin 9/9.1 is still based on 'buntu 14.04 stuff and support is good through 2019. Zorin is solid, but it is showing its age some; I'm guessing they didn't offer a new version yet because 'buntu 16.04 has been less than glorious.

 

eSword installation instructions are very similar to Xubuntu 14.04, except that "PlayOnLinux" is already installed for you. Follow the instructions for WineTricks here - http://www.biblesupp...-wine-on-linux/ then follow the eSword instructions in the first post.

One possible exception to the 'buntu 16.04 failures and woes is Lubuntu 16.04. It *seems* to work; I'm still testing it, but it looks promising. Why it works and the other 'buntu flavors don't, a mystery this is.

 

Open a Terminal window by pressing the keys Ctrl, Alt and "T", then type

 

sudo apt-get install playonlinux

 

Enter your password, then follow the prompts.

 

Then, to get everything functioning correctly, follow this for "Winetricks" http://www.biblesupp...-wine-on-linux/

 

At one point you will be instructed to download a file from download.com and move it to a folder that has been opened for you.

 

Next, you will have to do the whole WineTricks thing again; then you're done.

 

Hopefully you have a copy of eSword setup1040.exe, right click on it, select "Open with Wine Windows Program Loader" and follow the prompts of the installer.

The old eSword 10.0.4 works, but only if you have the CD,

or if you have previously downloaded it AND all the modules you want;

they are no longer available to download inside eSword via its downloader.
