BibleSupport has done a wonderful job of collecting resources for e-sword.

It would be great if these were available for other free Bible software that uses module formats such as Sword or JSword.

Is there any legal way for material in e-sword modules to be used in the other many free Bible software programs?

It's all on a case-by-case basis.  For copyrighted modules, you have to ask the copyright holder.  For other modules, ask the person who made it, because there may be some significant differences between what is posted and the original work (notes, revisions, expansions, corrections, etc...) which could make it technically copyrighted in some cases (a derivative copyright).

Hi David,

I'm one of those who do not believe in porting or converting e-Sword resources to another Bible program. My reason for this is that the guys here have spent a great deal of their time to create the work they have done for e-Sword. However, the only exception to this is if the producer of the resource wishes to have his work converted to another Bible Study program, then its up to him either to do it himself or give permission to another to do it. A good example is converting an e-Sword resource for MySword. If one wishes to have a particular resource for another Bible program, using your example, JSword, or the Sword, then one should create that resource himself from the raw data rather than using another Bible Program's data.

This is just my own feeling on the matter, and some would disagree with me. That said, it is what I believe as I think that, although the work may not be copyright, it is tantamount to theft.

Also, I remember back in the days of e-Sword version 6x, 7x, and 8x of a great deal of Rick Meyers' resources being illegally converted to TheWord, and the problems which revolved around that. So its because of these types of events that I have strong feelings about it.

Blessings,

Any module I've made includes copyright information in it. The vast majority of my modules are public domain. Just check in the module's contents (or the "about" tab) to find any relevant copyright information. Any of my public domain modules may be freely transmitted into other Bible software programs without prior permission.
