Here's your opportunity for input on e-Sword's resource location configuration.

Currently:

  1. You set the folder where e-Sword looks for resources by clicking Options > Resource. The "Location" field controls where e-Sword looks for non-user created material, like commentaries, dictionaries, devotionals, Bibles, etc.

  2. You can change the location of your Editor Notes (Study Notes, Journal Notes and user-created Topic Notes). You can right-click in any Notes window, choose Open, and the folder selected becomes the new location for reading/storing that Note type.

Proposed:

All user created files—your study notes, journal notes, topic notes you create with the Editor, bookmarks, verse lists, etc.—would be controlled through this new setting:

Attached File  new-location-setting.png   76.19K   41 downloads

This would mean all of your user created files would be in the same folder, controlled by the User File Location shown above.

In the example above, the User File Location is set to the DropBox folder. By default, the File Location setting would be your My Documents\e-Sword folder. You would now be able to change the location of all User Files quickly and easily.

Nothing changes with the Resources Location setting--it still controls where e-Sword looks for commentaries, dictionaries, Bibles, devotionals, etc.

This proposed change will affect the module installer, will it not

and it does appear from the amount of downloads it has that many people use it

I know how to manually install modules but I even use the installer just for convenience

May God change our hearts to what the truth is

2Ti_2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Rom_9:16 So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.

2Ti 2:24-25  And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;

Josh, I like the idea of controlling all of the e-Sword system resource files with just one utility.

For myself, I think that it would be also useful to view a complete list of whatever resource types I wish to view.  The way Resource Option tool presents your e-Sword system files today is that only 7 files/type can be viewed at a time.

The module installer might have to be modified to read the registry entry for the location of user created files (set using this new setting). I can't remember how it currently works--if I have it reading a file path or if I assume user created files go in My Documents\e-Sword. I probably assumed that as a hard location. This would effect (rarely installed files) like memx, lstx, prlx, ovlx, notx, etc. It would be an easy fix.

While I'm there, I can fix the 2 year old bug that's encountered with the Module Installer when you reset the e-Sword settings.

 Hi Josh,

Now, that little change you've "shown" there looks really good. I think if anything this does is it really give the user a "real" option of where he or she want to put his or her files.

I noticed the "dropbox" thingy in your idea. Taking just that to be implemented would be really great especially when it comes to syncing between devices via the "cloud," i.e., between work and home.

Well, thanks for showing what your thoughts are. Really good.

Blessings,

Just in the interest of disclosure, this wasn't my idea. It's Rick Meyers' screenshot.

He wanted to know if anyone would here would not like this new idea--would it somehow break or hamper the way you currently use e-Sword?

Hi Josh,

Oh well, sorry about giving you the credit for that.

Aside from that, its still a good idea.

I'm sort of thing at an idea you had a while ago about dropdown combo boxes which would read what chapters and verses have in a commentary. I still think this is a really good idea that could be incorporated into e-Sword.

One idea I had was to have a print dialog where within it one could have print odd and even pages option similar to those seen in MS Word, WordPerfect and etc. See example screenshots below.

Kingsoft Office Print Dialog

Attached File  KS Write Print Dialog.png   231.44K   12 downloads

WordPerfect X5 Print Dialog

Attached File  WordPerfectX5 Print Dialog.png   206.51K   12 downloads

I think that something similar to what is seen in the screenshots incorporated into e-Sword's print dialog would make life a whole heap easier.

Blessings,
