Hi, I've read one other post where the man seemed to be having the same trouble, but I've tried everything and cannot seem to get my study notes to save. The solution he found doesn't seem to make any sense.  I've been using eSword for a few years and have it installed on a few computers. I'm an experienced geek when it comes to pc's. I recently wiped all of them and re-installed all my operating systems and programs. I had saved my eSword file and like any other time I have had to wipe my pc I opened the old saved folder and all my study notes went back into eSword. But this time all the old notes are there but any new notes I try to save will not save. When I re-install eSword from a fresh download it will save the notes I put in, but when I move the old study.notx into the file it will not save new notes. I've tried downloading eSword with the old folder on the pc, with the  old folder on a backup drive and putting the old folder into the newly formed one, and every option in eSword for opening a new study notes and nothing works. I have the same problem on all the pc's I recently wiped. I've also tried to download it without the latest update but the problem persists. Not to be rude, but please don't respond to my post with obvious answers like "just right click and choose new".

Thanks,

Koinegeek

I do not have a definitive answer for you but something did pop into mind. You said that you re-installed th OS. I wonder if maybe it is an "ownership" issue for the old file?

Is the new install using the "exact" user name?

I remember reading somewhere that if you delete a user account, then re-create it using the exact user name and everything, there is still a new user ID associated with the account, and it is this ID that identifies the file ownership, not the user name.

You might try changing/taking ownership of the old file.

Again just an idea....

Thank you Roy. I'll give that a try.

I know it's been a while since I posted this but I found a solution and decided to relay that here for anyone who might run into the same trouble. I think Roy was right about what caused it but here is the fix I used. First I exported my study notes to a temporary folder, then I moved the study.notx file from the eSword folder to a backup drive. I opened eSword and saved some notes in the study notes which created a new study.notx file. Then I imported the saved notes in the temp folder into study notes and saved them which put them in the newly created study.notx file. After that I was able to add to my notes and save them like before.

Hi Brett,

One of the things I never ever do, is use the study.notx, the journal.jnlx, and the topic.topx generated files for my notes. All my notes (which are predominantly study and topic notes) I've created have their own unique file name. This saves a huge hassle of trying to find a particular note, or thinking that its lost.

There is another thing one should always do in the event of some form of an accident, and that is backup, backup, backup. I cannot emphasis this enough. I've done a silly thing once by accidently deleting a file and then empying my recycle bin. And like so many others, I didn't do a backup, and had to restart the project from scratch. As a result of that, I've learned a very valuable lesson, an now I backup my data files at least on a monthly basis. I try to have do incrimental backups on a weekly basis of files that I regularly work on. USB Pen drives are extremely handy little devices to have for backups.

When it comes to doing a backup, one really doesn't need a program to do it. The most simplist way is just drag and dropping files and folders from one drive to another, and hey presto! you've got your backup done and dusted, easy peasy, no worries at all.

Well, I trust this is helpful to you (and anyone else) that have gone through one catasprophic failure with their data files.

Blessings,
