Does anyone know who wrote the comments included in Barnes' commentary on Esword? For instance, on Hebrews 11:7, in the middle of Barnes commentary, there is a passage enclosed with parentheses, starting with "(If this righteousness which is by faith be the same..." Just curious.

Hello Aaron, I believe those comments were made by the original publishers of Barnes' Notes. Barnes was somewhat of a New School Calvinist and varied from traditional Calvinistic thought in some areas. Thus, you will find from time to time the publishers at odds with some of the conclusions that Barnes arrived at. Personally, I usually find him more compelling than his critics in these areas - but then again, I am not a calvinist

"Dr. Owen can scarce speak with patience of the view that excludes Christ as the specific object of Noah’s faith,” That in this faith of the patriarchs no respect was had unto Christ and his righteousness, is such a putid figment, is so destructive of the first promises, and of all true faith in the church of old, is so inconsistent with, and contrary to the design of the apostle, and is so utterly destructive of the whole force of his argument, that it deserves no consideration.” The idea indeed seems to derogate from the glory of Christ as the alone object of faith and salvation in every age; see also Scott. Bloomfield, McLean.)"
Hope this helps.

"Defenders of the faith are inclined to be bitter until they learn to walk in the light of the Lord. When you have learned to walk in the light of the Lord, bitterness and contention are impossible." --Oswald Chambers, in Biblical Psychology from The Quotable Oswald Chambers.

It appears that Barns is refuting a Dr Owen in the section you referred to. The initial section is preamble to demonstrating the Barns position/argument with regard to the section of scripture and shortly following the reference to 1st Peter 3:21 Barns begins the actual refutation of Dr. Owen.
