POPULAR

Users of e-Sword have the ability to buy some popular bibles like the one mentioned in the subject. MySword users can't, so I wrote a script that will parse the web pages from a website and convert them to a module for MySword. The script is written in perl and run in a Linux environment or in a Windows environment with Strawberry perl. See the instructions on my other perl script on how to do that. I will not make an e-Sword version of this script. Please buy the module instead.

Please note that you should only run this script if your local copyright law enables you to use the content of a website for something else than online browsing. If in doubt, do not use this script! In no way do I take any responsibility for someone else to violate copyright laws. Also, DO NOT distribute the generated module. That would definitely be a copyright violation.

Run the script with "perl niv4mysword.pl --version NIV" to create a module for the New International Version. Analogously use "NASB" for the New American Standard Bible, "NLT" for the New Living Translation and "AMP" for the Amplified Bible. Use "perl niv4mysword.pl --help" for a complete description.

I will not babysit the program. As soon as the website is modified and the script stops working, you're out of luck. It's a pretty time consuming job to find out the intricacies of the website so generate the modules while you can ;-)

The script is here: Attached File  niv4mysword.zip   9.43K   1184 downloads

Enjoy these bibles on MySword!

Regards,

Rob

Hello,

Your script is amazing! Thank you! Couldn't you write a general script for www.biblegateway.com? There is lot of version. Or if I want to be honest I particularly interested in Hungarian Bible: Easy-to-Read Version which is avaiable nowhere else.

thank you

Biblegateway detects that a bot is getting their pages and stops serving them, so I'm sorry but it won't work. I have once even written a script that randomized the chapters that I pulled and even inserted a random pause between each web request, of course with a spoofed user agent string, and even then it was discovered to be a bot.

Regards,

Rob

Dan,

I do not know all of the details, but the developers of MySword are based in the Phillipines.  This may present difficulties.

There are some really good recent translations based on the critical text (ISV, LEB) available for MySword freely (along with many others).

There are also some excellent majority text translations like Logos and WPNT.

I know it is frustrating, but you either have to make the modules yourself, use the scripts above, or use the free ones.

I agree with you, that MySword is the best Bible app for android.

Blessings,

Peter

Does this not say something about your Christian walk if you will gladly use this script to acquire BIBLES that you have not paid for?       As Peter said there are many good translations available for free.

Ps  Rob you have done great work for the Christian community but I would rather you had not written this script. :(

Can we agree to disagree? The script constitutes no violation of any law, either Dutch or US, as far as I can tell. The copyright holders have themselves published the bibles on a website and all this script does is consuming that publication. Nothing is distributed. Also, nobody is obligated to use the script and when they do they are presented with big fat copyright warnings.

That said, I would love to see that this script becomes no longer necessary. If the copyright holders would make their bibles available for MySword I would gladly pull my script and request people to buy those modules instead.

I'm all for respecting copyrights but copyrights do not and should not enforce the way the material is used.

No, but I think the script can be modified to create that as well. I'll look into it.
