Patchworkid: Thank you for the links... however neither seemed to be the answer to my problem.  I also looked at at least 6 other responses to this issue, none of which resolved my problem.

However, I did get the problem fixed.  E-sword was unable to open the topic, topx file. By using the cntrl-right click to open the file I also got an error saying unable to open the file because I did not have permission to open the file. This was apparently the source of e-swords issue.  I right clicked on the file and selected "take ownership" and then the topic editor was able to open the file.

I hope this resolution will help others with the same problem.

I found I simple solution for this problem: I had removed the 'my documents' folder to another place. Removing him back to the standard path, there were no longer any error notes!

Thanks - this has irritated me for ages and the fixes I had seen looked difficult. Yours was so simple and worked easily.

It's possible to change the location of e-Sword's Application Files (Bookmarks, Journal, Markup, Study and Topic). Open Notepad, and copy the registry info below into a blank text file:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\VB and VBA Program Settings\e-Sword\Settings]
"Markup File"="D:\\Data\\My Documents\\e-Sword\\markup.ovlx"
"VerseList File"="D:\\Data\\My Documents\\e-Sword\\Bookmarks.lstx"

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\VB and VBA Program Settings\e-Sword\Editor]
"Journal Notes"="D:\\Data\\My Documents\\e-Sword\\journal.jnlx"
"Study Notes"="D:\\Data\\My Documents\\e-Sword\\study.notx"
"Topic Notes"="D:\\Data\\My Documents\\e-Sword\\topic.topx"

Next, edit the location of the files to match the location of the '\MyDocuments\e-Sword' folder [on your computer]. Don't forget to use double-backslashes (\\) when doing so. Then, save it with the Registry File (.reg) extension. To do that, click 'File' [on the Menu Bar...top left], and select 'Save As'. Name the file 'e-Sword File Locations.reg' [or whatever name would be easiest for you to remember]. Next, select the 'All Files (*.*)' option in the the 'Save as type' box [located just below the 'File name' box]. Finally don't forget to save the registry file in a location you can find.

Now, go to the location, double-click the file, and confirm that you want [it] to make changes to your Registry. Then, re-open e-Sword, and all should be well.

I found keeping e-Sword’s default editor files in the in the e-Sword program folder, and I never use them for notes of any type.

When it comes to creating a note, whether its a study, topic, or journal note, I create a new file with its own file name.

Appreciate if you can elaborate on this, are you saying that it is possible to create a file with a name I choose & give it an extension of .jnlx  ,  .notx or .topx  ,  & just place it in C:\Program Files\e-Sword ?  & then be able to open it from the editor ?

this would be great if its possible , because its far better than the 'date' or 'verse' title names .

Cheers john
