I had to respond to my own typo, as it made me laugh out loud. "Scripute" seems the exact word to describe the endless proof-texting that constitutes debate these days!

I have always appreciated the vintage writings; these men seemed to have a deeper grasp of scripute than is generally found today.

I've never been a fan of "attack apologetics" more concerned with "winning" the argument (usually over some minor point of doctrine) while ignoring the more important issues.  If it isn’t an issue where the person's salvation is dependent upon getting it right, then there is room for discussion between Christian brethren.  Non-believers use such divisive "debate" as an excuse to "blaspheme the name of God" who says "By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another." (John 13:35)

The term "majoring in the minors" comes to mind when dealing with such people.

One of the reasons I like this site is that any disagreements tend to be handled with restraint and reason rather than polemics and name calling.

Thus says the LORD, "Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast of his might, let not a rich man boast of his riches; but let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, (Jeremiah 9:23-24a)

"Defenders of the faith are inclined to be bitter until they learn to walk in the light of the Lord. When you have learned to walk in the light of the Lord, bitterness and contention are impossible." --Oswald Chambers, in Biblical Psychology from The Quotable Oswald Chambers.
