Is Handfuls on Purpose still under copyright or is it in the public domain? I've seen several versions of it floating around the web,

It's public domain.

The reason I ask is because my copy (in the first Volume of the Five Volume set) says:

Handfuls on Purpose, five-volume edition, copyright 1971

by William B. Eerdmans Publishing Company

Handfuls on Purpose, Series I, II, and III by James Smith

First American Edition published in 1947

by William B. Eerdmans Publishing Company

Reprinted, February 1991

The final volume of this series was originally published in 1916 and then later published in 1943 by Eerdmans. Either way, it's public domain because anything published before 1923 is public domain. Anything published between 1923 and 1963 that was not renewed properly is also public domain.

Copyfraud is rampant among Christian publishers. I've found material published in the 1800s that was claimed to be under copyright.

Thank you very much. I was not aware of that.
