File Name: Jackson, J B - Dictionary of Proper BIBLE Names

File Submitter: david psalms

File Submitted: 31 Oct 2012

File Category: Dictionaries

Author: J B Jackson
e-Sword Version: 9.x - 10.x

Some years since, the present writer, in pursuing his studies in the Bible, reached a portion which consisted largely of Proper Names, and at once he was confronted with the fact, that a considerable and, to him, important portion of the Bible was untranslated.

Fully persuaded that “whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning,” and that “all Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine” (Rom. 15:4, 2 Tim. 3:16); and hence that there could be no idle word in God’s Book; he set about preparing an accurate, alphabetical list of all the Proper Names of the Old and New Testaments with a view to securing the best possible renderings of the same.

Fortunately, there was ready access to the works of Cruden, Long, Oliver, Young, Wilkinson, Charnock, McClintock & Strong, Smith’s Bible Dictionary, Abbott’s Dictionary, Imperial Bible Dictionary, Encyclopaedia Biblica, and, before the list was complete, Strong’s Concordance, Tregelles, F. W. Grant, and others.

At the end of about three years, the writer had obtained a meaning for nearly every proper name in the Bible, and, on the recommendation of friends, began preparations for publishing the results of his labours for the benefit of others similarly interested.

His plan was to arrange the names alphabetically, as spelled in our common English Bibles, attaching the meanings he had found in the order in which he considered them to have weight, i.e., in the order in which he considered their sources to be authoritative.

As at last update, Jan 02, 2022, there are three downloadable modules provided by Bible Support, for Jackson, J B - Dictionary of Proper BIBLE Names 1.0
[1] Dictionary of Proper BIBLE Names by J B Jackson.dctx 1.9MB
[2] Dictionary of Proper BIBLE Names by J B Jackson.exe 408.71K
[3] dictionary_of_proper_bible_names_by_j_b_jackson.dcti 452K

The *.exe will Install "Dictionary of Proper BIBLE Names by J B Jackson.DCTX" modified 2012-10-31 1.946KB into the folder which you have assigned on option for e-Sword for the PC "Options", "Resource Options", for the "User Files Location".

Open the Dictionary Maximized (Ctrl+F4).
Select the tab "J B Jackson"
Select the icon Dictionary Topics (Ctrl+T)
The list will be populated, and listed in alphabetical order.

The entry after A'bel beth ma'a chah = Mourning (or “meadow”) of the house of oppression, does not provide a display, when I had loaded the ".DCTX" module, using the *.exe option. How to overcome this problem. Close e-Sword. Browse down to the module, and append ".old" to the filename. Then Load the *.dcti module. Then restart e-Sword. Then the missing entry can then be selected, and will display as:
A bel ker a'mim
Mourning of the vineyards

How to find the entry - read the list with your eye. This is NOT a "topic" entry, but a "dictionary" entry. The entries are listed in alphabetical order.

HINT: To allow the *.exe file to be downloaded, append ".docx" at the end of the filename to be received. Then, as with all files downloaded to Microsoft Windows 11, view the "Properties" of the entry, and remove the security block. Then change the spelling of the filename by removing the ".docx" and then the self-installing *.exe file will run correctly. Even though the filetype is in all capitals, ".DCTX" e-Sword for the PC is able to load the module okay.

If you have e-Sword for PC version 11 and later, preferably load the *.dcti module, as this is coded for HTML characters.
If you have e-Sword X for Mac, e-Sword HD for iPad, e=Sword LT for iPhone, or e-Sword for Android, load the *.dcti module.
