For those of us who use free Bible software, MySword is currently the only option for us to carry a large percentage of our theological library with us.

I like MySword and now use it on my Droid phone. But on the Apple platform (ipad), all that's available are bad free apps or pay for apps, unfortunately. If they made MySword for the Ipad, I would definitely use it.

All,
I know this much, the more modules one has banged up on e-Sword (and I guess that this goes with any Bible software), the longer he takes to load up. As for the actual total amount of stuff I have in my e-Sword folder is 550 resource files. So, my e-Sword she does have a bit of a struggle. But against what others may have it guess what I have could be regarded as a drip in the bucket.

Total resource types I have are:
  • 81 Bible files
  • 43 Commentary files
  • 13 Devotional files
  • 53 Dictionary files
  • 16 Graphic files
  • 338 Topic Note files
  • 6 Reference Book (refx) files.
All my tabs are multi rowed as I hate single row tabs because you got a heap of them to go through to get to the module you want. Me, I'm just your max 3 click person. Anything more than that is way too much hard work, so I keep all the tabs multi rowed.
  • Bible and Dictionary tabs are 5 rows
  • Commentary tabs are 11 rows. That's because I've got my Commentary and Editor views looking like columns.
  • Graphics Viewer tabs are two rows.
  • Devotional Viewer is one row.
As for what I actually use for my Bible Study, they are:

Bibles:
  • NKJV (Default Translation)
  • NASB (Secondary)
  • NIV85 (Chief cross referable)
  • CJB (Secondary cross referable)
  • Transliterated Bible (Chief Hebrew and Greek reference)
Dictionaries (Lexical)
  • WordStudy (Default)
  • BDB (Secondary for Hebrew)
  • Thayer (Secondary for Greek)
Use both BDB and Thayer in conjunction with TWOT and TDNT respectively.

Dictionaries (Syntactical):
  • TWOT (Default Hebrew)
  • TDNT (Default Greek)
  • Trench (Secondary Greek)
Dictionaries (Theological)
  • Baker's Evangelical Dictionary of Biblical Theology (Default)
  • ISBE (Secondary)
  • Wilson's Dictionary of Bible Types (Reference only)
Commentaries (Cross Reference)
  • TSKe (Default)
  • NKJV and NASB Footnotes and Cross Reference (Secondary)
Commentaries (Interpretative)
  • RWP (Default)
  • Vincent's Word Studies (Secondary)
  • K&D (For O.T interpretation)
  • JFB (Referencing)
  • Jewish NT Commentary (Historical Cultural Background)
Commentaries (Theological)
  • Bible Knowledge Commentary (Default)
  • Believer's Bible Commentary (Secondary)
  • Barnes' Notes on the Bible (Chief Cross referencing)
  • Expositor's Bible Commentary.
I reckon if I took of all the other resources (unchecked them in the in the Resource Options dialog) as well all the reference books, I'd say the increased speed of my e-Sword would improve by about 75%.

Pretty comprehensive list. Thanks for sharing that. Have you done any perfomance testing to comapre your performance with your favored resources including and excluding less used items for comparison? That would be intereting data.

I have a question for anyone out there who can answer it. Does simply unchecking a resource remove it sufficiently from the e-sword program so as not to "drag it along" anyway, or should I actually place unused modues in a separate file away from e-sword to prevent the program from being slowed down?

Thanks!

hi

My suggestion is to test it out.

1. Put over 3 gigs of modules into the main folder and run e-Sword if it slows down you have enough modules in there.
2. go to Options - Resource and uncheck all leaving a few 10 or less checked
3. Close e-Sword and open it again ; If it does not slow down as before then it is OK
4. But if it is still slows down ; then remove the modules you do not want into another folder.

I keep all my modules I do not use in another folder called e-Sword 10 all.

try the test out and let us know

thanks

I tried that and it seemed to only make marginal differences. My speed for starting up is fine with all of the modules installed (about 15 seconds), but the verse changes seem to delay occasionally as much as 5 seconds if the commemtary and dictionary windows remained linked in. Unchecking modules makes little difference. Do you keep your e-sword module storage folder inside the e-sword program, or do you have it stored elsewhere, such as Documents?

Thanks for the advice!
