"Defenders of the faith are inclined to be bitter until they learn to walk in the light of the Lord. When you have learned to walk in the light of the Lord, bitterness and contention are impossible." --Oswald Chambers, in Biblical Psychology from The Quotable Oswald Chambers.

The problem with archive.org text is Lange's extensive hebrew words will be missing. Some chapters have thousands of Hebrew characters. Keying those will take a substantial amount of time. If the missing chapters turn up, they can always be added later.

apoc-lange.jpg 56.97K 10 downloadsI haven't seen any evidence of commentary on the Apocrypha, (there is no index anywhere in the volumes I have, but then I haven't done more than leaf through the set.)
---
Switching gears to my earlier post: The Isaiah 8-9 and introduction I needed has been sent to me, so that's resolved.

Phew! Glad to see that crisis over... I was getting nervous!!!
The Langes fan club eagerly awaits the modern technological release/rebirth of this classic biblical work!

I should have been more clear. The hard copy Langes I have doesn't include or mention the Apocrypha, apparently Zondervan left it out of that printing.
The mixed set that I have is incomplete, but spans across at least three different printings by Zondervan. Only one of the groups has an actual print date in it, which was 1960. there is no sign of an aprocyiphal version included based on what I see, but clearly Josh has a scan of an apocryphal commentary. It seems that the Aprocrypha was left out in some releases? When you said you were going to cut out the pages and scan them I started to sweat a little bit. haha...

By far the bulk of the e-files stated out hard copy books (or whatever) that someone disassembled and scanned (can't get a good scan while it is still bound for the most part), then run through a OCR (optical character recognition program) to allow it to be converted to a module.
Some OCR programs are better than others but they all have "quirks". I recall spending a bit of time trying to figure out why a certain word was being used in a sentence where it made absolutely no sense, only to realize that the module creator (or proof reader) missed an OCR error that read the word but as lout.

Of this process, the phase I am near completing (the formatting and marker phase) is by far the most time consuming. Rather than blindly running scripts on the text, I've formatted the text on a chapter by chapter (or section by section) basis so I could see what was going on and correct issues that arose using Microsoft Word's Visual Basic environment. (One of the dirty little secrets in the Bible software world is to guess at what makes an implicit reference explicit [ver 18 should Genesis 1:18 or Matthew 1:18 or ? depending on the context of the text] and then use a script to force-format the verse whether its valid or not. I've seen thousands of verse errors in modules I've thought about converting to e-Sword). So I've tried to take my time and do this like I did the Biblical Illustrator. Keeping the footnotes linked to their references has been a huge pain but the effort has been worth it--to be able to click a footnote in e-Sword and it take you to the linked footnote.
I deviated from the approach that you see in the HTML files. I went with Lange's natural breaks in the text. For example, in Genesis, this is chapter by chapter. In Matthew, this is almost verse by verse (where Lange divides his analysis, discussing just a few verses at a time). I divided the commentary according to however Langes divided the commentary--where he completes his divisions is where I completed mine. I also re-parsed some of the text which brings certain comments to a new line (they were on the same line in the printed edition only to conserve space). In terms of actually being able to read and understand the text without being overwhelmed, I believe this rendition of Langes is better than any other Langes module for any other Bible software. I'll let you be the judge of that when it's done.
I'm hesitant to give more estimates on completion because of unforseen issues I can run into or because of family commitments that arise, but we are getting much closer and I'm continuing to work on it as often as I can. I will say this: Langes was an amazing commentator, simply amazing. I've read a lot of his comments as I've worked on this project and what an incredible mind he had. The more comfortable you get with this writing style, the easier it is to understand. I'm eager to get this done.
