The Bible is clear that elders were an important part of the early church. Paul returned to congregations in order to ordain elders in each city. He left Titus in Crete to do the same thing. The elders from Ephesus came to visit Paul at Troas. Paul addressed letters to the churches with their elders. Peter gave commands for the elders at various congregations (and was an elder himself). But it seems the modern world of "Christendom" has moved away from the Bible's teaching on the role of elders (also called pastors and bishops in the NT) in the church.
