April 2009 - After 9 years and 9,000,000 downloads, e-Sword version 9.0 is released. New features include a completely new database architecture, case-sensitive searches, and Study Notes can be made on any verse in the Bible, now including the Orthodox Apocrypha and the Catholic Deuterocanon. Before then, the file names had the file type indicated with 3-letters, such as bbl and top files. These files are all classified for e-Sword version 8 and below, on the Bible Support website.

If the download file is dated before the year 2009, it is not designed for the latest versions of e-Sword, without being converted to a new internal structure.

It is very important, and useful, to remember that it was only with e-Sword version 10.1 in March 2012, that the new features include the ability for Commentary, Dictionary, and Devotion views to display pictures, so modules can now be created with pictures in them. Then, April 2014, e-Sword version 10.3 is released. New features include the Editors now support right-to-left languages such as Hebrew. Then July 2014, e-Sword version 10.4 is released. New features include User Files Location field in the Resources dialog for customizing where you wish for your user files to be located. This is very convenient for setting up with backup or synchronizing programs, such as Dropbox. So prior to this the .top and .topx files and their associated pictures were saved to the C:\Program Files\e-Sword folder, or to the C:\Program Files (x86)\e-Sword folder; depending on whether the Windows PC was running (32-bit) or (64-bit).

If you convert a top file to topx remember to look at the details - the graphics pictures may still be linked to the old link and you will have to find the graphics, add chapter (topic) entries to the topx file, and paste the pictures to new chapter pages in the new topx file, and re-save the file with its new content.

For assistance from Bible Support of how to open a .top file with a recent version of e-Sword for Windows, please view the two videos associated with "How to read/convert a .top file in e-sword latest version" at http://www.biblesupport.com/topic/7775-how-to-readconvert-a-top-file-in-e-sword-latest-version/ Browse down the answers. and on page 2 of responses, you will find the videos provided by APsit190.

ADDITIONAL NOTES The instruction Ctrl+Right-click means press the Ctrl key on your Windows PC keyboard, and while holding that down, also click the Right mouse button, or the equivalent section of your track pad that duplicates the actions of the right mouse button. Release both keys, then after selecting which types of files to view, move your pointer to the appropriate "Open" option. After the file is Opened, you can tap the "Save" icon, and the file will be saved in the [same ?] folder where you found it, with a .topx file extension. The previous file will be renamed with a .top.old file extension, and retain it original date. You will probably find a chapter number appended in the file, with the name "New Topic File", right at the end of all other chapters in the .topx file. Select that page, and give it a suitable new name. If you leave a space before the name, this is likely to be saved at the top. Save the file. Exit e-Sword.

Re-open e-Sword, and look for your file under the Topic Editor files. The chapters inside the TOPIC EDITOR .topx file will be re-sorted when they are re-opened, and will have been saved, in alphabetic-numerical order. Add your own notes to the new chapter page you have in the file, and save them by tapping your pointer on the "Save Topic" icon.
