For whatever it's worth, here is how I resolved the issue:

  1. Using the free Revo Uninstaller, I completely uninstalled e-Sword from my Windows 10 PC. Revo Uninstaller download:  https://www.revounin...-free-download/
  2. Using Revo, I carefully proceeded to remove every remaining traces of e-Sword that were left behind after the standard uninstall. Disclaimer: If you are not comfortable doing this, you may end up causing other issues, so proceed with caution. Revo is intuitive and straight forward enough for the average user, but it may be too aggressive for some.
  3. Make sure to restart the PC after having uninstalled the program.
  4. Do a completely clean re-install and it should work.
  5. You will need to re-install all of your proprietary modules, so make sure to have a backup folder to re-populate your catalog.

Frequently Asked Questions

I JUST INSTALLED E-SWORD 13 AND IT WILL NOT START!

e-Sword 13 requires that the Windows Media Player is both installed and enabled. Instructions for doing so are available here: Get Windows Media Player

This is from e-Sword.net FAQ

Notice installed and enabled

You can have this on your system but not enabled. If you follow the link mentioned to Get Windows Media Player, you have the option for it to be enabled for you.

Or do it yourself, by opening Control Panel -> Programs and Features. On the left side click "Turn Windows features on or off". In the "Windows Features" check the box "Media Features" and the sub box "Windows Media Player". Now you should be good to go.
