Dear all,

In 1890 James Strong published his Strong's Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible. He has done a tremendous work putting all the Greek words of the New Testament in our hands. He also considered the Hebrew Old Testament. This was in the 19th century. Today, in the 21st century, we are all happy to use the Strong numbers.

But, if you consider the Greek Old Testament, the Septuagint (LXX), you will rapidly find out that there are many Greek words which have no Strong number. Is that possible? Why? Simply because they are not present in the Net Testament, and consequently there is no Strong number for them.

By the grace of God, this vacuum was filled by Charles VanderPool, who after working for more than 20 years, published in 2003, the Apostolic Bible Polyglot (ABP). The ABP is an English translation with a

Greek interlinear gloss and is keyed to a concordance. The numbering system is a modified version of Strong’s concordance, which was designed only to handle the traditional Hebrew Masoretic Text of the Old Testament, and the Greek text of the New Testament. Strong's concordance doesn't have a numbering for the Greek O.T. The ABP utilizes a Greek Septuagint base for the O.T. and, therefore, required an extended system. For more detail see https://apostolicbible.com/

Charles VanderPool added 3751 new Strong numbers. And there are 5624 "classical" Strong numbers.

Charles VanderPool granted me the permission to work on the new ABP-Strong numbers, and I would like to start a project to add all the new entries to the Strong dictionary available in MySword.

I use MyBible and MySword on my Android devices, both having a ABP module. For now, MySword  is just perfect for ABP, as it properly handles the three-lined interlinear: the 1st line for the Greek text,  the 2nd line for the corresponding Strong numbers, and the 3rd line for the English translation. You can have a look at the attached MySword screenshot, which is showing Genesis 1:2 in ABP; you can see there the Greek word "αόρατος" (unseen) with "classical" Strong number G517, while the next Greek word "ακατασκεύαστος "(unready) has the "new" Strong number G180.2.

The only issue is with the 3751 new ABP-Strong numbers, as they are missing from the embedded Strong dictionary.

I saw that in MySword, the Strong dictionary is stored in the file “strong_lite.dct.mybible”.

Could someone explain please how to add new entries to the Strong dictionary embedded in MySword?

The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest. - Mat 9:37b-38

Thank you all

God bless

The dictionary cannot be edited through MySword as MySword does not have that functionality.

Having stated the above a little more information is necessary to explain why the editing cannot be done. Content for bible software such as e-Sword and MySword is contained in individual modules that can be installed and or removed as needed.

The dictionary file you named in your post, strong_lite.dct.mybible, is a mysword bible dictionary module. It is one of 26 dictionary modules that can be downloaded and installed in MySword through the official mysword website known as mysword.info.

You can use e-Sword's module creation tool called e-Sword Tooltip NT to create modules that can then be converted for use with My Sword using a separate program called Simple Bible Reader.

Before going to all the work of creating a new module there might be a module here on this site that has what you want it is called Strongs Plus Dictionary Droid MySword Version and can be downloaded from this link:

When you say "Charles VanderPool added 3751 new Strong numbers. And there are 5624 "classical" Strong numbers." could you give us an example of what you are referring to. eg  a added number with the Greek and included text from the dictionary and where it would be used in the bible.

My initial post is complete. But you are right: I’ll take the opportunity to explain that more clearly. Consider LXX Genesis 1:2:

Gen 1:2  η G3588 δε G1161 γη G1065 ην G1510 αορατος G517 και G2532 ακατασκευαστος και G2532 σκοτος G4655 επανω G1883 της G3588 αβυσσου G12 και G2532 πνευμα G4151 θεου G2316 επεφερετο G2018 επανω G1883 του G3588 υδατος G5204

I’ll proceed point by point

  1. the Greek word, "αόρατος" (unseen), has a “classical” Strong number, G517;

  2. G517 has 7 occurrences in the whole Bible: 2 in the LXX OT and 5 in the NT: Gen 1:2, Is 45:3, Rom 1:20, 2Co 4:4, Col 1:15,16, 1Ti 1:17, Heb 11:27

  3. Because "αόρατος" is present in the NT, James Strong assigned to it the number G517

  4. But if we take now the Greek word "ακατασκεύαστος" (unready), you can see there’s no Strong number for it, because "ακατασκεύαστος" isn’t present in the NT

  5. LXX contains many words which aren’t present in the NT, and having no Strong number

  6. Charles VanderPool filled this gap and assigned to "ακατασκεύαστος" the number G180.2;

  7. But why G180.2? Even if this is beyond the scope, I’ll explain that too: the word "ακατασκεύαστος" has the root “ακαταπαστους” (ceaseless), which the “regular” Strong number G180, as “ακαταπαστους” (ceaseless) is used in 2 Peter 2:14. Therefore, Charles VanderPool linked the LXX-only-word "ακατασκεύαστος" to the NT-word “ακαταπαστους”, by assigning to it the "new" Strong number G180.2. (Notice also that G180.1 also exists and corresponds to another word present in Job 20:18).

  8.  As said, Charles VanderPool added 3751 new Strong numbers.

If you check the LXX, you’ll see all these words without Strong numbers. For ex on StudyBible, here: https://studybible.info/LXX_WH/Genesis%201

On the other hand, if you check ABP you will find that each word has a Strong-like number. For ex, BibleHub has ABP and the “new” Strong numbers are there: https://biblehub.com/interlinear/apostolic/genesis/1.htm

Also, MySword ABP has it too, as you can see in the screenshot of my initial post.

What is then missing? Well, the new ABP Strong numbers aren’t present in the dictionaries. On BibleHub, if you click on G180.2 you will get G180. All the other Android applications don’t have these “new” ABP Strong numbers in their dictionaries either.

Now that I can see exactly what your first post referred to regarding the additional numbers added to Strong's dictionary. The answer maybe quite simple.

All of the Strong's Concordance modules available for most bible software packages are based on the printed version of the concordance which is a copyrighted work via Thomas Nelson publishing company. As such the modules are licensed for use with various bible software packages such as e-Sword, MySword, and MyBible

Since the printed version of Strong's does not include Charles VanderPool's additional numbers, the dictionary modules do not either. There is also  the question of whether the bible software packages will recognize Charles VanderPool's numbers. By this I mean that most bible software packages are designed or hard coded to only recognize the standard set of Strong's numbers.

Editing new numbers into existing Strong's dictionary modules may not be doable, that being said it should be possible to VanderPool's information to the dictionary so that the entry for G180 which is displayed as follows:

G180

ἀκατάπαυστος
akatapaustos
ak-at-ap'-ow-stos
From G1 (as a negative particle) and a derivative of G2664; unrefraining: - that cannot cease.
Total KJV occurrences: 1

The information for VanderPool's number G180.2 could be added below the existing Strong's information and so on for all of the other VanderPool's numbers

Your solution is interesting, but I really want an entry for each Greek word. We are in a technological era: the dictionary will be in a database, and I need a primary key for each entry in the dictionary.

Thanks! You have opened my eyes. In this case the solution is very simple. Charles VanderPool worked out not only a new translation of the full Greek Scriptures, but also a Analytical Lexicon containing all the Greek words appearing in the Greek Old (LXX) & New Testament. It has almost 1000 entries, each of them having its meanings and

its Strong number (old or new one). I will then use Charles work and I will produce from scratch a new complete dictionary, say ABP-dictionary. No more copyright and licensing problems.

Actually, that is exactly what you should do.

Just to give you a couple of examples to give you the reason of why, there are two Strong's numbered Greek Lexicons which have extra numbers in them:

  1. NASB concordance - which is synced (or coordinated to the NASB+ Bible
  2. Strong's with Tense, Voice, and Mood (SDTVM) Dictionary - which is synced to the KJV+TVM Bible.

Now, these extra numbers in the above two examples, will not appear as a tooltip in any other Strong's numbered Bible. So, when it comes to the "APB" Lexicon you wish to create, then you will need to have a Strong's Numbered Bible which will have those those numbers that are in your lexicon included.

Trust that you find this helpful.

Blessings,
