My one works fine, so...

Maybe you don't have any installed, or in the wrong location on your hard drive. Also could be possible that they are incompatible (not mapx file types). The issue is not with e-Sword because mine and others don't have the problem you have. So check out what you may have done in where e-Sword isn't loading the files.

Blessings,

I am having exactly the same problem since a recent major update to my Windows 10 desktop PC, which necessitated reinstalling all my e-Sword software and modules. Everything works except my .mapx files. The system (i.e. both the Module Downloader and the Graphics Viewer) recognizes that they are loaded, displays information about each module and the Graphics Viewer lists each individual map in the file: but the main display area remains stubbornly blank! Yet the version of e-Sword on my laptop displays graphics quite happily. I have compared the files in the program directories - and they contain exactly the same files, even down to the date stamps. The Resources and User Files locations are the same ( c:\program files (x86)\e-sword\ and c:\users\MyUsername\documents\e-sword\ ); though in both cases the abs.mapx file has actually been loaded to c:\Users\MyUsername\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\e-Sword.

I have tried repairing the installation; de-installing and re-installing; de-installing, deleting the program and VirtualStore directories and then re-installing. Still the problem persists; leading me to suspect that it must lie somewhere in the Windows registry. But where? Is there a procedure for safely cleaning the registry? I've tried using the Help/Reset e-Sword Settings option: but that didn't fix it.

One further clue, maybe. I've discovered that, as soon as the Graphics viewer is opened, it creates a file, ''c:\users\MyUsername\documents\e-sword\temp.pic". But this file is never populated; always showing 0 KB file size, and the timestamp is never updated again, even if e-Sword has been shut down, unless it is deleted while e-Sword is closed.

I've finally muddled my way through to a workaround: though I'm not entirely sure how. Thanks to JPG for his patience and suggestions this afternoon. The problem appears to stem from a combination of issues:

  1. Many settings in the Windows version are held in the Windows registry. It rather looks as if some of these can only be set properly when e-Sword is started in the 'Run as Administrator' mode (simply having Administrator privileges is not enough: as Windows only asks for verification when e-Sword is started). When changing settings for the Resources and User Files locations, I'd strongly advise making sure that you use 'Run as Administrator' when you set the locations AND the first time you start e-Sword after setting them. Otherwise, I think it may be possible that there is a discrepancy between the locations shown in e-Sword and those actually being used by Windows.
  2. I'm not sure why this was: but to get my mapx files working again I had to switch from the default Resources and User Files locations. It seemed that Windows and e-Sword could happily read the text from these files when they were in either "c:\program files (x86)\e-sword\" or "c:\Users\MyUsername\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\e-Sword". But they could seemingly not find the embedded images. To get my mapx files working I had to set the Resources location to "c:\program files (x86)\e-sword\" and the User Files location to "c:\users\MyUsername\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\e-sword\". (This meant that the mapx files are now in the new User Files directory.) I then moved the files that had been in "c:\users\MyUsername\documents\e-sword\" into the new User Files location.

While I was experimenting, in order to avoid losing all the Resource files I had painstakingly downloaded or created before, I copied these into backup folders, then de-installed my existing copy of e-Sword, deleted the existing directories and installed a clean copy using the 'Run as Administrator' option. Once I had the mapx files working, I was then able to copy the backed-up files into their appropriate directories. They became functional again the next time I started the program; though I did have to reset things like panel layouts and hidden resources.

One further point that may be of help in tracking down the cause of this problem. Whilst I was experimenting, whenever I tried unsuccessfully to view a downloaded mapx file, I noticed that a temporary file, "temp.pic" appeared in the User Files folder. This was 0 Kb in length and never written to. If it was deleted, it would appear again as soon as another mapx viewing was attempted. This suggests that either Windows or e-Sword was using this directory as some kind of default for graphic files.

Regarding the downloads of files and modules for the different varieties of e-Sword, the developer, Rick Meyers, in reply to a query, wrote on 2022-08-17 as follows: "All of the apps have the same downloadable resources, except for the maps which are a PC-only resource."

If you have a suggestion as to how the maps could be converted for HTML access, which will work on the different propriatery Operating System platforms, used by different computer and portable electronic devices, on which e-Sword is running, please contact Rick Meyers with your suggestions. It is possible that some of the publishers of maps are using proprietary methods which they do not make available because of considerable patents and legal copyrights of methods and content, between various countries, and different computer platforms.
