File Name: Complete Jewish Bible

File Submitter: IsaiYah

File Submitted: 10 Apr 2019

File Category: Bibles

Author: Dr. David H. Stern.
e-Sword Version: 9.x - 10.x
Suggest New Tag:: Jewish, Hebrew, Names Restored

Presenting the Word of God as a unified Jewish book, the Complete Jewish Bible (CJB) is a translation for Jews and non-Jews alike. It connects readers with the Jewishness of the Messiah. Names and key terms are returned to their original Hebrew and presented in easy-to-understand transliterations, enabling the reader to say them the way Yeshua (Jesus) did.
The CJB is a translation of the Bible into English by Dr. David H. Stern. It consists of Dr. Stern's revised translation of the Old Testament (Tanakh) plus his original Jewish New Testament (B'rit Hadashah) translation in one volume. It was published in its entirety in 1998 by Jewish New Testament Publications, Inc.
The Old Testament translation is a paraphrase of the public domain 1917 Jewish Publication Society version. The New Testament section is Dr. Stern's original translation from the ancient Greek.
Dr. Stern's purpose for producing the Complete Jewish Bible was "to restore God’s Word to its original Jewish context and culture as well as be in easily read modern English."
The CJB follows the order and the names of the Old Testament books in the Jewish Bible, rather than those of typical Christian Bibles. It uses Hebrew names for people and places, such as Eliyahu for "Elijah", and Sha'ul for "Saul." The work also incorporates Hebrew and Yiddish expressions, such as matzah for "unleavened bread" and mikveh for "ritual immersion pool".

About the Author

David H. Stern, born in Los Angeles in 1935, is the great-grandson of two of the city's first twenty Jews. He earned a Ph.D. in economics at Princeton University and was a professor at UCLA. In 1972 he came to faith in Yeshua the Messiah. He then received a Master of Divinity degree at Fuller Theological Seminary, did graduate work at the University of Judaism, and was active in the Messianic Jewish movement. In 1979 the Stern family made aliyah (immigrated to Israel); they now live in Jerusalem, and are active in Israel's Messianic Jewish community

This commentary is a companion to Dr. Stern's "Jewish New Testament," which is his translation of the New Testament from the original first-century Greek into enjoyable modern English. This translation brings out the essential Jewishness of the New Tesament by its use of Hebrew names and Jewish termonology and by its correction of antisemitic renderings found in other translations.

The "Jewish New Testament Commentary" discusses, verse by verse, Jewish issues raised in the New Testament--questions Jews have about Yeshua, the New Testament, and Christianity; questions Christians have about Judaism and the Jewish roots of their faith; and questions Messianic Jews have about their own identity and role.

Dr. Stern is also the author of "Messianic Jewish Manifesto," which outlines the destiny, identity, history, theology, and program of today's Messianic Jewish movement, and of "Restoring the Jewishness of the Gospel," an abridgement of the "Manifesto" meant for those unaccustomed to thinking about the Gospel as Jewish.

In 1998, Dr. Stern published the "Complete Jewish Bible," his stylistically modified adaptation of an existing Jewish translation of the "Tanakh" ("Old Testament") bound together with the "Jewish New Testament."

dougboninsegna, you are welcome to type in the words from the Hebrew language and from the Koine Greek languages in which the Scriptures were written, into your new Apple computer running the M2 chip. Then use your knowledge of the computer language, to make an electronic copy for yourself, which you can then read, and compare with other translations on your own computer screen. Then translate this, yourself, into many other languages.

However, if you are working for a company of people, who derive their income from purchasing machinery, making paper, and creating suitable font characters, which will make the words easier to read, and then printing the derived pages, in well-produced books, on very expensive equipment; and making the product available, by transporting it to various countries, for sale, or distribution, to the people, then you realize that finance is necessary. This is why the cost of producing books, at the university level of quality, is very expensive.

God's advice to us is that we should be prepared to: "Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding." Proverbs 23:23.

When we are able to apply the advice to PAY IT FORWARD, so that in the same way we have received information for free, we will also do the same for others, then do so. Otherwise, spend your money to purchase the truth. Then make it available to others who can make good use of this wisdom.

"O generation, see the Word of the LORD. Have I been a wilderness to Israel, or a land of thick darkness? Why do My people say, 'We roam freely; we will come no more to You'?" Jeremiah 2:31 (AFV)
"Heal the sick. Cleanse the lepers. Raise the dead. Cast out demons. Freely you have received; freely give." Matthew 10:8 (AFV)
"And said to him, "Every man serves the good wine first; and when the guests have drunk freely, then he serves the inferior wine. But you have kept the good wine until now." John 2:10 (AFV)

This advice is a very clear instruction to us, that we ought to be prepared to spend our wealth, which we have gained from hard work, to help others. Do not just think of the truth as throw-away cheap merchandise which is only to be used for commerce. It is much more valuable than that. We need to get the information from genuine sources of wisdom. We must incorporate the truth into our memory, so that we incorporate the principles that God teaches us, into our way of life. Others can then benefit from our example of helping them with much better quality products than they can provide for themself.
dougboninsegna, you are welcome to help your brothers and sisters, worldwide, by providing free electronic versions, translated into their languages. If the work is your own production, biblesupport.com will be prepared to make your work available to the world for free. You can make donations to biblesupport.com to help to maintain this website in existence.

Copyright is on the sale of versions, by the publishers, in order to maintain quality control so that bad instruction is not incorporated by pirates into the words of the product that is on sale. If you have their permission, in writing, to provide their work, for free, on biblesupport.com then please incorporate that permission information, clearly explained, into the product you want to share on the biblesupport.com website.
