If I remember, the last time I copied stuff from the RL it didn't do that. Not sure if I had MS 2016 last time. I restored MS to factory settings, but that hasn't fixed it. Anything else you think it might be?

When you do a cut and paste, there are three options if you right click to paste Keep Source Formatting, Merge Formatting, and Keep Text Formatting. Hover over each of the choices and a preview drop window lets you see what you will get.
If you merely Control V to copy you get the Keep Source Formatting (default), however immediately following the paste is a small window showing a clipboard if you hit the down arrow the three options available with the appear. That window disappears when you type either a modification in the copied text or anything after it.
Hope this helps, I wasn't able to recreate the problem so I can't be positive that this would solve your particular problem.

JPG, yeah I tried that. Wordpad wipes all the formatting, and there's usually some formatting I like to keep. This particular work makes use of italics, so when I highlight all and then remove italics it removes everything including the italics I want to keep.

What module are you copying from? I'll take a shot at recreating the problem so I can take a good run at solving it.
Most of my e-Sword cut and past is from the Bible, Commentary and Dictionary areas so I use the macros for it.
I did try doing a quick cut and paste from one of the more heavily formatted modules have, but it was a commentary (Guzik's) since it is in the form of an outline. I should like to try it on a reference book, but the ones I have very little in the way of special formatting.
