2016 ESV Permanent Text Edition

I want to be sure I do this correctly. My the file name of my current ESV version (2001) is esv.bblx I renamed it as esv 2001.bblx and saw that e-Sword still recognized the file and loaded it in to the Bible tabs. Now I'll download the 2016 version and install it. But before I do, what I'd like to end up with is both versions available in my Bible tabs.

 

Can this be done? How do I rename the tabs so that I can easily tell which tab shows which version?

There are 4 versions of the ESV: 2001,2007, 2011 and 2016. (The copyright of the ESV started in 2001)

The previous version is from 2011 (not 2001).

I think the best free one to start is the one offered by crosswire app.  That ESV is 2011 version, with Strong's numbers & footnotes.  make those 52 changes + changes in footnotes ... you can get a 2016 version with Strong's numbers (but don't mix up their another module of 2001).

Thanks for the responses but they have gone astray a bit from my questions. I want to keep the 2001 version and am only interested in the 2016 version for comparison. I've heard, and this may be wrong, that the ESV has gone gender neutral and made other less than precise translation changes. So I want a newer version to see how they have changed it but I want to keep the older version.

What I'd like to know is, now that I've renamed the esv.bblx to esv 2001.bblx and the translation appears in e-Sword with a tab name of ESV, if I now download the 2016 version through the e-Sword download menu, will my 2001 version be overwritten or will it be safe and the 2016 version installed as a second tab labeled ESV? I can then use the tab renamer to help me differentiate between them.

Rename the tab for the  2001 version before you install the 2016 that way nothing will be lost. The files will not overwrite each other but E-sword will have problem with two identical tabs 

Is there a copy of ESV (2007 edition) somewhere?

Crossway has changed its mind; the 2016 edition was to be the permanent text edition (which is now available on e-sword.net, by the way) but no longer.  They will continue to tweak the text periodically:
