So many people are moving to Linux because it is free and it works. Please, please develop e-Sword for Linux.

It just does not work right in Wine and having to go to the trouble of a Virtual Box just to run one program is

hugely inconvenient.

I tried contacting him too with no response. Disappointing at best. I don't know if it is a lack of time, money, or resources...

I'm curious Obie, what Linux distro are you using?

Here is a "Guess" and I do NOT speak for Rick Meyers... If by develop for LINUX you mean an open source version (in the true sense where you can get/view the source code) I highly doubt it would ever happen. (Maybe a BSD style license where source code can be kept hidden...) There is code in the application related to decrypting commercial resources (paid for books) that would need/have to be kept confidential.

Open sourcing e-Sword would necessitate revealing that code, and would likely violate agreements Brother Rick most likely has with the publishers of said resources requiring him to keep that code confidential.

Developing a LINUX version would also require maintaining another code base. Whenever updates/features are needed (or desired)  that would add to the work/man hours required to implement those changes.

I think your best bet is to use an application native to the OS (maybe the Sword Project) and convert resources as you need them.

Overall, the more platforms you have to support, the less time you have to devote to each , consequently you see the overall quality start to fail.

Good post, and I agree with you completely. I did run e-Sword under Linux Ubuntu and Wine for about 2 years with no problems at all. That's been some time ago now. I found the instructions that made it work perfectly on a Ubuntu forum.

It has been a number of year since I've used LINUX. Back then I was using it almost exclusively. I did play with WINE back then but never really took it very far. I usually tried to find a pure LINUX solution. I also tried the SWORD project and it was ok, but I still preferred e-Sword. Back then I was a fan of Red Hat/Fedora and ubuntu when they used KDE. I just got tired of not having the apps I wanted to use without having to jump through hoops.

I also like Apples OS-X. Their interface has an elegant polish that I just don't see any where else. Oh well.....

Getting and learning new development tools, some of which cost money,

And I'm sure there are others.

Finally, you can already run e-Sword on Linux. I know that it's not the easiest setup, but it does work and work well.

I don't think this is necessarily true because of the fact that e-Sword has been built for OSX Macs (including iOS).

This can be also true for developing for Windows, and is dependent on the what is being developed. The code is basically pretty much the same irrespective of the platform that it is developed for, and only a few lines of code is changed for compatibility of the OS itself

Getting and learning new development tools, some of which cost money,

Not really because most IDEs (Integrated Development Environments) are pretty much standardized, as also is the programming language used. C++ is still C++ irrespective of the IDE it is used in. What makes a program work on a particular platform is the Compiler it builds for. Moreover, Embarcadero has developed a programming IDE which developers can compile for multiple platforms (Windows, OSX, iOS, and Android). Fact is when it comes to the "Write once, Compile for all," maxim, I really think that Embarcadero's RAD Studio would have to be the ideal IDE to have, and it would really save a great deal of issues when it comes to developing for other platforms.

Then only part will agree with you is the cost factor, but once it is eliminated, then really there are no problems.

Moreover, because of VM technology, it is not difficult to program in a totally different environment/platform using an IDE built for it. And I think when it came to developing e-Sword for iOS and OSX, that is what Rick actually did.

A thought just occurred to me. I tend to think if Rick were to use a tool, i.e., as Embarcadero's RAD Studio, I think that he would save money due to the fact that all testing would be done within the IDE, thus eliminating the need for different types of VM ware.
