Maybe some of your Brethren who are copmputer literate can give me some help.

I have been using E-Sword for several years with much pleasure and instruction from the WORD.

Lately though, it has slowed down to a crawl. It will take as long as four minutes to load up.

I have tried to delete almost everything that is useless. I have several PC programs to speed up and eliminate

useless data. I'll admit that I have loaded down the site with many of the Bibles, Dictionaries and Commentaries

but I did not experience the problem until lately. When I click on a couple of the Commentaries,

the screen goes light and it will take as long as three minutes to return to normal. Should I delete these

volumes?  I have W7, 64 bit and the latest E-Sword installed. My PC runs ok other than my favorite, E-sword.

The e-Sword loads up with the blue logo immediately but then takes so long to load the essentials.

Thanks so much for your help!!

I suggest that you consider a couple of things.

Have you recently added or changed 'anti virus/malware' program or real-time settings of these?

Move one-by-one to another temp location, the most recent modules you have installed to see if one or more have a dramatic effect on startup and operation.

The more modules you have the slower it becomes.  Mine is in the several minute area to load and when switching between modules it takes a bit as well.  Some modules are worse than others.

There is a program or two that allows you to select  fewer modules at start up and then another set of modules for other things but you have to restart esword each time you want to use another set.

Let me tell you a little secret that I have discovered - and I know that this sounds nuts.

When I'm just cruising through eSword, switching from pane to pane, I was having the same problems.  Then I started to make an effort to only use the sliding window bars on the right of every floating window (Bible, Commentary, etc.).  AND, if I wanted to switch from the Bible pane to the Commentary pane, I would preface the move by first clicking on the blue header at the top of the designated pane.

I also started using the 'B', 'C', 'D', 'E' buttons a lot more.  The lock-ups and software freezes were cut back tremendously.  Why?  I haven't a clue, but it worked for me.  Here a jpg screen shot of what I'm speaking of - the shaky red pen markings is what I'm speaking of.

Attached File  Capture.JPG   173.42K   49 downloads

Whatever I did, I endeavored to never use my cursor on the window pane itself.  As soon as I did, my eSword started to freeze up again.

Oh, and I also reduced the number of modules the software was asked to load - it had no impact on this problem.  I also doubled my systems RAM - again, no impact.  I also re-installed eSword.  That had a small impact, for about 2-3 days.  Nothing seemed to work, except me watching where I was clicking my cursor...that seems to work, for me at least.  I'm also using Win7 Home Premium with an Intel i5 CPU on a small Asus laptop.  A fine little computer that usually does what I ask it to do without complaint.

hi Larry G,

that is some good info.  There should be a forum dedicated to on to use e-Sword better.  Listing the problems and solutions to use e-Sword better.

what do you think (Josh) and others?

thanks

In my experience, the dictionaries really degrade computer performance. Although LarryG did not find that adding RAM helped with computational speed, when my eSword experience last lagged, I added RAM - and it completely solved the problem. (NOTE: a faster processor will also increase speed; but it is much easier/cheaper to increase RAM than to speed up your computer processor.)

SUGGESTION: Navigate to "Options / Resource..." and unselect 75% of your dictionaries. Restart eSword and see if your performance speeds up. If so, you need more RAM. Or you can just activate the dictionaries you really use on a regular basis. Keep the rest of them inactive until you specifically want to use one/some/most/all (which is probably not very often).

In the Dictionaries window, you can try making sure the "Synchronize Lookup with Word Click" is not pressed--that's the chain-like icon on the far right in the Dictionaries window. You can also try clicking the open book icon next to it to remove the Dictionary topic list.

Dr. Dave's suggestion of reducing dictionaries is also a great idea. I've had issues with dictionaries slowing e-Sword as well.

If it just started happening and did not get progressively worse as you added modules, but just happened all at once? Consider rebooting. Also temporarily try disabling the last 5 modules you added.

A small part of the 4 minute delay when loading e-Sword is if you aren't connected to the internet or you have firewall blocked e-Sword--it tries to connect to the internet every time you start it.

I hope in the future e-Sword is rewritten in something other than Visual Basic. VB is just ...slow. For now though, I think your problem would be corrected by rebooting or removing some commentary or dictionary modules.

In the event you're thinking the problem might be the PC rather than the program, I'm going to take this opportunity to let you know that I've not had better luck with any anti-malware program than with Malwarebytes. It does a better job of speeding up my Windoze PC than anything I've ever used. You can download it here:

Thanks for your help. I did download the malwareby. I did delete the programs that caused the great delays in opening and so far

E-Sword is almost back up to speed.

Thanks again!

I'm going to try what hrob1 suggests, because nothing have helped me so far. Deselected modules, added ram, but it keep happening. It's not a big problem but just annoying.
