I´ve found in www.religion-online.org  plenty of good books about the Bible. I dont know if they are available for "e-swording" them; or  if they need permissions. I´ve printed some of them for myself to read them carefully.

blessings to all who contribute to this site!

Sometimes people need something, i.e., books, other people, etc., that will guide them to the Holy Spirit.  Not everyone can make a leap of faith unaided.

I grew up in a denomination where people loved saying that. They were simply ignorant (or too lazy to study), and that's why they frequently misunderstood what the Bible said.

Reading the gospels without a thorough understanding of the Roman empire, is like trying to understand the history of World War II without Germany's ruling party.

Reading Matthew 24:1-2 without knowledge of what happened 40 years later, doesn't give you the full impact. And it may relate to why Jesus wept as well.

God gave you a brain. He expects you to use it, rather than waiting on thoughts to pop into your head, which as Paul noted, may not always be trusted. :)

To dismiss the wonderful bounty that 2000 years of wisdom and insight that others have gleaned from the Word of God is indeed a very sad thing.

I think we need a balance here.  We need our Bibles and we need to read our Bibles.  Some only read their Bibles and do not have a full understanding of what they have read, while others read everything else and have little time for their Bibles.  Read you Bible over and over and over again and then dig into the reference works for a deeper understanding.  Then go back to your Bible and check out what you have read. Then go to your reference works again and dig still deeper.  Choose a book of the Bible and immerse yourself into that book.  Read it over again and again in one sitting if possible.  Build your outlines, analyze the text and graph the sections. Then seach your reference materials as if you are searching for hidden treasure which of course you are.

StandingFirm: what you (and Josh & others) wrote is perfect! Let´s use Lk 11:42 "These you should practice, without neglecting the other" GNB. Study the Bible: it contains the Word of (the only) God. Study it with the wisdom & intelligence God has given to men.

And let´s keep loving withou bitterness!

blessing and thanks to all!
