Lange's commentary on the Scriptures is one of the few public domain commentaries that has a positive recommendation by MacArthur's Master's Seminary (the 1960 edition is listed; but I imagine the public domain version is substantially the same). Thanks Josh I'll let you know - the format it has a lot of returns and a lot of misspelling. How do you deal with all the returns without doing each one manually.

We can possibly do a search and replace in Microsoft Word to get rid of returns that shouldn't be there. Let's talk in email about it.

There is a program I used years ago that took out extra something - I think returns, but don't remember. I did some googling and found it mentioned on this site http://www.digitalhu...a/v05/0524.html just use find for "textcon" and you can see what the recent program does.

The one I have it very old so not sure if it does what the newer does. Not sure if it is available either. Textcon is the name of the program.

Nice, I will check that out, it may be better than Microsoft Word is for fixing this issue. For formatting text to put in an e-Sword module, I couldn't live without Microsoft Word.

One of the first things I do is search/replace all numbers so that they are highlighted in yellow. That helps out tremendously with identifying verse references or what should be references (without lots of scanning with my eyes). When I'm done, I just do the same search/replace and un-highlight the numbers.

Word supports regular expression search and replace, so many repetitive formatting issues or characters can be dealt with quickly and easily. If headers are out place, or need text in front of them or behind them, you can even re-arrange the order of words with a regular expression search/replace. If you have RTF hyperlinks and you want to have only the text of the hyperlink (or the text of the visible link), a regular expression search/replace easily solves that (or if you want to just delete the hyperlinks and leave nothing). If you notice problematic text is always preceeded by a tab and begins with italicized text (for example), that's easy to identify. If you want to find every bible verse with a set of parenthesis before or after it, for example, that's easy to do. Finding only bible verses (and not numbers) is easy to do.

It takes some trial and error for each instance of building the right query, but for this particular error of extra returns, many times the "extra" returns are found by searching for ^13, where as the returns that are supposed to be there are ^p. If this isn't possible, then sometimes a tab exists before line breaks that are supposed to be there. So then I just search for line breaks without a preceeding tab. There's a number of ways to work with this situation, depending on how you can isolate the line breaks that should not be there.

Whole websites now deal with the syntax and support of Microsoft Word's search/replace functionality. It rivals (some of/much of) Linux sed's functionality (for the 2 or 3 of you who know what that is).

Could you create macros to do some of that repetitive stuff? I am assuming Word has macros. Again, years ago I had to put references (I think it was) into a certain format so a work could be included in Online Bible and I did a macro that saved me days of work. (Sorry for mentioning that uh other Bible program :-)
