I have one that someone made (a real stand-alone program that opens and converts and generates an e-Sword module). But someone will not let me distribute it, apparently because some in theWord community will be offended. My rebuttal to that was: "but, it's ok for there to be an e-Sword to theWord converter?" :)

Hi Josh,
I'm gonna make a recommendation that may just be a tad bit squeamish and upsetting for some. Takes a strong stomach to do something like this. Now, if the bloke doesn't have a copyright notice on the program, then its fair game for anyone and everyone. And if it does, but no license with it, well mate there are things you can do do it which is quite legal.

So here goes:
  • Hack into the program to read the code.
  • Print out the code or save it as a text file.
  • Create your own GUI and give your own unique names to the components you need to use
  • Where Variables have to be declared, give them unique names you wish to call them.
  • Using the code you hacked as a template, rewrite it in such away for it to be your own code.
  • Debug and fix any errors.
  • Build and then distribute.
  • Finally whatever you do, don't tell the bloke what you did, cos if you do, he just might get a tad sort of upset. Hate to see a grown man throw a hissy fit.

See, more ways in killing a cat than choking it with whipped cream.

I gave my word that I wouldn't distribute it.

Given those 3 problems I identified earlier, 95% of users would lack the knowledge to use it properly. I imagine if he goes to the trouble of fixing those issues (and it's going to be a lot of trouble for one of them), he may see about distributing it.

Copyright is in effect when the creative content is in a fixed medium. That includes being on a hard drive, in electronic format.
As such, the binary is under copyright. No telling what the license is.

Anyway, it is much easier to write something from scratch, than try to fix binary code.

A good e-Sword <-> MySword <-> TheWord conversion program will take into account the presentation markup language differences between the programs, and correct them, as part of the transformation from one format to another.

If such a program irks some TheWord users, then it probably means that it is a program that should have been publicly released some time ago.

I'm wondering why there have been so many downloads of BPeST?

I can understand Ben downloading it, and the person (¿people?) that emailed me a request for it. However, I don't think I have had more than three requests for it in the last two years --- if that many. [On the flip side, the requests went to an email address that tends to forward email that does not have a precendence of "junk", "list", or "bulk" to Dave Null. It was a fluke that I saw the request today, and I think I may have recieved one a couple of months ago --- by the time it registered on me that a false negative might be present, the folder was deleted.]

Eight downloads might not seem like many, but this is a program that is literally unsupported, and all but unsupportable.

###

If Josh wants to make a section for downloading obsolete, unsupported and unsupportable utility programs, I can upload around 35 programs that were specifically written for e-Sword and Pocket e-Sword resource creation and management.

On e-Sword-users.org, there were a couple of requests for some of those obsolete programs. There was a conscious decision not to upload them, because support was an issue. Furthermore, we (the e-Sword-users management team) didn't want to encourage people to stick with e-Sword 7.x, which is what the majority of these tools were created for.

You need to select the text you want to copy, click ctrl-c, and then paste it wherever you like.
