It's too bad Rick has opted not to do public beta release testing.

Two or three individuals doing private beta testing provided Rick with more bug reports, and more strange issues, than the public beta testing did. It sounds counter-intuitive, but that is what happened when he did do public beta releases.

I think beta testing should be kind of like a medical trial experiment. A broad, or at least a variety of people that use Esword in diverse ways. I think you have to know the people personally that are testing the software so that you have confidence in what they are doing and telling you. The design intent has to be understood by the tester.
You need power users, module developers as well as a few people that just move around in different ways browsing reading, a little editing, whatever.

I gotta say though, there isn't any flawless beta testing scheme and the only way to ensure that you get fully tested software is to wait a few months on new releases and let users shake it out. The bigger problems will be solved by the time you get there, with the case of a free software with a limited development staff there are always going to be little things that you run across.

I thought the 10.0-.05 betas went very well. Everyone knew they were testing software and those who weren't comfortable with that didn't participate. Those who were found a number of bugs. I'd guess Rick would do it that way again if he had it to do over. I know he liked the centralized feedback.

10.0.x was a very substantial upgrade. The RTF display is the heart of e-Sword. When you change that, you're going to run into a few issues. And we did. :) In terms of code disruption, I believe 10.0.x was the biggest upgrade since 9.0. But for such a substantial change with a new RTF control that has a steep learning curve, it could have been much worse. i was pleased with the process and the result, and I'm glad we all had an opportunity to voice a "say so" in the finished product.

Just a point of interest with software 'numbers'. We now have version 10.1.0.

What constitutes the change of numbers from say 9.0 to 9.1 to 9.3 and so on, and then a complete change of digit from 9 to 10?

Just of interest

May God change our hearts to what the truth is

2Ti_2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Rom_9:16 So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.

2Ti 2:24-25  And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;

Dan,

I have a clean text of the Works of John Newton and have it on my to do list....but it's going to be a while. If you or someone else want to tackle it I will gladly send you the text. Newton is a favorite of mine, so if no one else is interested maybe I'll prioritize it.
