Update: Windows users can now use the e-Sword Module Installer!

Download the e-Sword Module Installer.

1) If the file you download from our site is an executable file (.exe), then just run that file and it will install the resource for you automatically.

2) If you download a resource that is compressed in a zip file (.zip), double click (or run) the zip file to open it. Then copy the e-Sword resource to your e-Sword folder (see #3)

3) If you download a raw e-Sword resource: Bible (.bblx), Commentary, (.cmtx), Dictionary (dctx), Topics File (.topx), Reference Library (.refx), Harmonies (.harx), Devotionals (.devx), copy these files to your program files\e-sword folder

Location of your e-Sword folder:

C:Program Files (x86)\e-sword

-OR-

C:Program Files\e-sword

4) If you download a Bible Reading Plan (.brpx), Memory Verse List (.memx), or Verse List (.lstx), copy these files to your my documents\e-sword folder.

EXCEPTIONS: Some rarely used resources, like Bible Reading Plans (brpx), must go into your My Documentse-Sword folder or e-Sword will not find them. I think Memory Lists (.memx) is the only other exception.

Files that the user is actively editing should be in the /my documents/e-Sword/ folder.

Why not use 1, at most 2 archive types - .zip or .exe, no raw resources. I don't blame users for getting confused, add the archive types to the resource types, yikes!

What about using a uniform naming scheme. For example, the F.B. Meyer - Bible Readings on the Psalms Commentary could be archived as fbmeyer_psalms_comm_cmtx.zip, with the archive name, File Name: listed above the File Size: on the download page. If the user can't find the download they know the exact name to search for. The archive name also contains the resource extension type.

You could provide the details on the download page:

File Name: fbmeyer_psalms_comm_cmtx.zip
File Size: 489KB
Resource Name: psalmcomm.cmtx
Location: e-Sword Root Directory

The Location: could be a link to a Help page explaining the resource types and where they're located on the various systems, and how to extract the archives to the proper locations. Just one man's opinion :)

This used to be an easy program to install. When I first got on e-sword I downloaded the module resource then double clicked it in my download file and it self installed, then there was a download program that did all the installation itself after you chose which resources you wanted. At this time it became harder to share because people were forced to have web access and some libraries in my area don't allow ANY kind of downloads, except form Microsoft for updates. As the case was I had the old program on a flash drive so I could share it and did with many. We, myself and those I shared it with, supported the project by purchasing resources from the E-sword store, later E-source. now the way the program is set up I am not having any success in getting it to work at all past the core module. The troubling part is I've lost my flash drive.

@Tavarich7

You can still distribute e-Sword with additional resources for your friends who don't have an internet connection, simply copy the resource form your existing e-Sword installation, the Bibles, Dictionaries, Commentaries, Topics, etc, and put them on the flash drive, CD, DVD, with the latest installer. You will need to install e-Sword on their system of course, after e-Sword is installed copy the raw resource to the same location as you copied it from on your system.

The e-Sword Download Manager found on the menu listed as Download, will download the raw resources, slang for Bible (.bblx), Commentary (.cmtx), Dictionary (.dctx), Topic (.topx) etc, and will locate them in 1 of 2 locations:

Most resource files will be in the e-Sword root directory along with the executable - e-Sword.exe. The rest of the resources are usually found in the \My Documents\e-Sword folder. A search of your system for \e-Sword should quickly locate both directories. Once you've located the resources, the file types for the given addons have been mentioned many many times :), highlight the file, and 'copy' it to the location you have the e-Sword installer.

I like to know files I'm moving from one location to another stay unchanged so I create an .md5sum against the file, not necessary but it lets me know the file hasn't changed from when I first copied or moved it.

I was installing to Windows 7 and ran across an issue that I thought I'd share. First I installed the Chronological Bible Reading Plan and it was not recognized by e-sword. I researched here and found out that that type of file (.brpx) file needed to be placed in .../my documents/e-Sword/ folder. So I thought I installed it there. Still not recognized by e-Sword. Then I noticed that the install program added /e-Sword to the path name during the install. So if I browsed to .../my documents/e-Sword and clicked on install, the reading plan was installed to .../my documents/e-Sword/e-Sword. I had to remove the second /e-Sword folder.

@bobinedgewater

You're given the opportunity to go Back and correct the path for extraction before clicking Install. You will also be shown the full path in the window, if the destination is incorrect, change it before running the installer.

Unfortunately, I can't reproduce this problem on Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7. When I download a file from any of these computers, it displays the proper installation path. And that makes sense because the installer does not append e-sword--the path is defined when the self installing executable is compiled. It also accurately detects a 32 bit operating system: c:\program files\ and a 64 bit operating system: c:\program files (x86)\

Now, if you override the installation folder by typing something else, then the next time you run another setup, it will remember the path you specified previously. That's a feature of Innosetup, the program used to make the executables. I'd rather it not do that because I suspect it's behind the issue here.

I can only tell you what happens at my end, I'm not changing anything.

My downloads location is I:\Downloads, when I double-click a resource exe file from this location the path to extract is shown as I:\Downloads\e-Sword.

When I move the exe file to I:\Documents and Settings\Mike_S\My Documents\e-Sword and double-click it to extract, the path becomes I:\Documents and Settings\Mike_S\My Documents\e-Sword\e-Sword.

I'll see if I can edit my previous post so others wont get confused. Sorry, I shouldn't be offering advice, I'll be quiet from now on :)

Hmm, that's odd. What version of Windows are you running so I can try to replicate this?
