Dave,

Thanks for the post. So, I am trying to make sure, in layman's terms, that I understand this.

If a book is printed pre-1963, and does not appear on the Stanford Copyright Renewal Database, it is considered public domain?

Usually? Always? Or is there another caveat that comes in to play? What if a company has been printing the book and selling it since its original publication date in the 1930s? Does that have anything to do with it, or does the fact that they didn't renew the copyright mean that it is public domain now?

I really need to understand this properly because I've got some books that would make great modules, but I need to make sure of this before I invest the hours of time in making them.

More detailed discussion here: http://onlinebooks.l...u/renewals.html

Do note that we're just discussing works copyrighted in the US only.

Any takers on whether or not Disney can change the US copyright laws again during the next 11 years?

There is a battalion of them working on that issue right now. "Interested parties and stakeholders" are welcome to participate, but general public is prevented from attending, because they are neither stakeholders, nor an "interested party".

Option # 1 / BibleSupport.com:Option # 2 / Internet Archive and Google Books:Option # 3 / Project Gutenburg:Option # 4 / The Latin Library:Option # 5 / Christian Classics Ethereal Library:Finally:

Select an appropriate text:
  • Download all of the formats that the book is distributed in, that is available on that site;
  • Do a search on each of the following using the resource name and e-Sword as the key words:
    • Google;
    • DuckDuckGo;
    • Ixquick;
    • GoodSearch;
    • Bing;
    • Wolfram-Alpha;
  • If there are no hits on the material as an e-Sword resource, then post a notice that you are going to convert the PDF to e-Sword format at the Modules in Progress sub-forum ( http://www.biblesupp...es-in-progress/ );
    • Wait 72 hours, and if no response, then start working on the resource, making periodic replies to your original post about the status of your progress;
  • If there hits on the material as an e-Sword resource, download the resource, and examine the following:
    • Is the content identical to the original material;
    • Does the presentation markup conform to current standards;
    • If the answer to either of those is "no", then either create the resource from scratch, or fix the currently available resource. (in most instances, it is easier to create a resource from scratch, then fix an existing resource.);
    • Make an announcement at the Modules in Progress sub-forum ( http://www.biblesupp...es-in-progress/ ) that you are fixing the resource;
[/list]###

Some other possibilities are described in various threads on the old e-Sword-users.org website, in the Other Bible Software ( http://e-sword-users...sers/forum/2149 ), The Tea Room (http://e-sword-users...users/forum/164), and Feature Requests / Wishlist / Coming Attractions (http://e-sword-users.../users/forum/13) sub forums.

###

(^1): I state 1909 as the year, as, under US Case Law, all content published that year, or before is public domain. The cut off date, under US Statute Law is more than a decade later.
