I had e-sword on my computer, with lots of modules.  However, my hard drive was filling up so I installed a portable storage device (always plugged in to a USB port) and moved the complete e-sword folder there.  Then it no longer worked.

So I reinstalled the latest version of e-sword to the same folder, so that it would recognize my modules.  (Location E:e-sword)  It still didn't recognize my modules, so I painstakingly downloaded them again (through the program) and deleted all the old ones.  I started e-sword and I was up and running, with all modules there.  Yay!  <_<

BUT . . . today I noticed that my e-sword folder had apparently spilled it's guts.  In E: were all the files that had been in the E:e-sword folder yesterday.  AND they were still in the E:e-sword folder too.

So I painstakingly deleted all the e-sword files that had magically appeared in E: from amongst all the files and folders that belong there.  Then I went to E:e-sword and clicked on the application to be sure all was still well.  I was amazed that it began to 'initialize', and when it did, it duplicated all the files from the E:e-sword folder into the E: root directory again!  And when I opened e-sword all my modules were gone.  Aaargh!

What is going on?  Why can I not install to a folder such as E:e-sword instead of having dozens of files in my E: directory where I don't want them?

Why does e-sword insist on putting the files in that location again?

Why does e-sword not recognize any of the modules now?

Please help!!

(I really don't want to have to redownload every module later when they are already on my computer.)

Check if those files are in the default folder: otherwise reinstall e-Sword automatic to the minimum default.

ComboList.ocx
License.pdf
RichEdit.ocx
custom.dic
e-Sword.exe
e-Sword.tip
e-sword_guide.pdf
kjv+.bblx
kjv.bblx
localize.lanx
tsk.cmtx
vssp_ae.dic
vsth_ae.the

If e-Sword not longer reinstall; click then to Options/Resources and select the Resources Location.

Based on your comments you created an issue when you moved e-sword to your E drive from your C drive. When e-Sword first installs on a Windows computer, the installer application creates two important directories or folders. One folder is located in the programs folder and the other located in your documents folder. These two folders contain important files that are required for the proper operation of e-Sword and e-Sword looks for these two folder by default at start up.

When you moved e-Sword from your C drive to your external E drive you moved e-Sword physically but from a programming stand point it was still connected to your C drive. This is why it stopped working once you did the installation of the new version you needed to reinstall each module so that the new version of e-Sword would find them on the new location, the E drive. The modules were still from a programming stand point installed on the C drive.

At this point I suggest doing the following to hopefully correct this:

1. Copy all of your modules files to either a new folder on your E drive or a flash drive, just the module files

2 Once you have all of your modules copied do a full uninstall of e-Sword from your computer. Checking to make sure nothing is left behind after the uninstall process is complete on both the C and E drives.

3. Do a new install of e-Sword making sure to indicate during the install process that e-Sword is to be installed on your E drive not the C drive.

4. Download the e-Sword module installer from this site and install it on your C drive

5. Reinstall your copied modules to e-Sword by using the module installer. The module installer activates automatically when you double click a module file that is not installed into e-Sword, this is why step one above is very important creating the copies of the modules will allow for quick and easy re-installation. Each install using the module installer takes about just a few seconds.

following the steps above should result in a clean working version of e-Sword

Here is the link to download the module installer:

Thank you so much!

I just want to confirm--since I am wanting to run e-sword from e: should I install the module installer on my c drive like you said?  Or on the e drive?

If your installing a module using .exe then it should install automatically to the e-sword folder in e: i’m pretty sure. Give it a try.

My question was: where should I put the module installer? :)

Install the module installer on your C drive, when it activates to install a module it will give you the option as to where to install the module. The module installer is set to install modules to the C drive by default but it also has a an option for a custom install in a different folder. Use the custom option to install your modules to E drive.
