David King was born in 1819, and became an avid reader when a neighbor allowed him free access to his large library. This same neighbor also encouraged him to attend the Wesleyan Chapel. Years later, he heard of Christians in America who refused to be called by denominational names or be bound by denominational creeds, and he set out searching for people of the same mindset in England.

In 1848, an Adventist group invited him to speak, and as a result, the entire congregation of 150 people were converted to true New Testament Christianity. He was just as enthusiastic about preaching to groups of four or five as preaching to four hundred.

Beginning in 1866, he set to training young men for the ministry. He edited a Christian journal for close to forty years, and wrote hundreds of articles. He was also an avid debater, especially effective when debating spiritualists, secularists, and atheists. Some of those he debated later became Christians as a result of the debate. He died in 1884.
