Just a moment off topic.. what are these green and red numbers in the bottom right corner of the postings, please?

These are just a way for members to vote on whether or not they like or agree with a post. I am sure the vote means different things to different people.

If you like a post, or think a post adds to the discussion, vote it up.

If you do not like a post, vote it down or ignore it.

I generally only vote a post down if I really do not like it.

I hope people do not take these things personally, we all have different opinions on things.

The theory is that the number reflects how useful the post, or resource is.

Like all crowd based rating systems, they end up being used to either suppress ideas that some find disagreeable, and push ideas that some find agreeable, regardless of the objective merits of the idea in question, or else to push personal agendas.

Hi Pete,
Hmmm, so I guess that in a sense this is an anonymous way of disagreeing with a person without saying anything as to the reason why you disagree.

Now I reckon that this where its really at.

If one dislikes or disagrees with a post, I tend to think one should follow it up by actually posting his disagreement. I tend to think this would actually help if a person made an error or got something wrong and needs to be corrected. Also, where someone likes a post, this also should be followed up by commenting on it especially where one can add or build on the information that makes it more helpful.

If the ratings are to be accurate in measuring as to how helpful the post is or is not, then there should be a score line which can give an output to measure the helpfulness of it rather than just a Like or a Dislike, otherwise all this is doing is giving a person an ego trip of how popular he/she is.

Stephen,

I was just attempting to answer the question about what the green and read buttons represented. If you do not like the concept, you are free not to use them. If a person posts a post that is thankful or helpful to another member, then I vote it up. I do not think anyone is getting a bloated head because of it.

Sometimes it is just not the place to reply to a post you disagree with. This site is supposed to be a site to help people use e sword and to find study resources, it is not intended to be a site to argue/debate other issues. There are other sites for that.

There are often posts that are not helpful, or that try to push other agendas. I personally do not have any problem if people vote those down. I obviously did not put the voting system on here as it is not my site. I do not know Josh's reasons for it as I have not asked him. However, if it discourages people from posting things that are not helpful then it is my opinion that this is a good thing.

I would also support the votes not being anonymous. I do not know if this is possible.

Blessings,
Peter

I'm thankful for the +/- indicators. I usually give a (+) to anyone who gives a reasoned answer or is willing to help out answering a question.

I always give a ( - ) to people who seem argumenative or rant. LOL Maybe that's why I get a few negative votes myself! The questions, even if I don't understand them, usually become clear over the course of time - along with the answers.

There are issues here on this forum/website that I just don't know how to deal with, but I just let it ride - knowing God can deal with anything he want's to.

I do not think I have ever pressed the red negative button. I do not think I am qualified to make such a decision. On the other hand, I have pressed the green positive button for several reasons:

If I am emotionally or spiritually moved by the post.
If the individual is giving us a module that is needed/wanted.
If the post is well reasoned and the logic points are scripturally justified
If the post is helpful to me or others.
If a post has received an overall negative rating, I may use my choice to cancel the negative out.
If I just like what the post says.
If I just feel like doing it for whatever reason or for no reason at all.
Other: to be determined as the cases arise.

Mostly I forget I have the option of doing so, having reached an age where I cannot remember why I got up to go into another room.
