All,

I know this is a one year old thread but I've been trying to get an answer to a problem with e-Sword running under wine/ubuntu for more than a year!

It's a not a showstopping problem, but nonetheless.

Basically when upgrading to e-sword 10 I followed the "silverlight" instructions on several forums and reinstalled using the exe, not the famous install script from one of the Ubuntu forums - everything worked except none of the verses highlight or sync to the commentaries. Can anyone here shed light on this? Is there a specific .dll for wine that is responsible for this?

I've asked on several forums more than a year ago and have yet to get a reply.

Again, not a showstopping issue but still high on the annoyance list ;-) Any help would be appreciated.

George

The below is old information that might or might not still be good, but those are the four dll's that I used to get mine going right years ago when I ran Linux. If you run a Google search for "e-Sword Linux Wine", you should be able to get more current information about what goes where and what to do. First, you have to know where to put the dll's, and I don't remember. Second, you have to set dlloverrides in Wine, and I can't remember much at all about that. Also please keep in mind that none of this information might be current now. I hope it helps you though. Also know that these dll's might be included in the latest versions of Wine and could do harm instead of good. I just don't know, so be aware of this.

riched20.dll
msls31.dll
oleaut32.dll
mfc42.dll

hi george,

i am running ubuntu 12.04. as far as wine, the version i am using is wine 1.4.

with regards to wine installation etc. i added all the recommended add on. one thing i found quite usefull was the following overides in wine:

jscript (native, built in)

msvcr90 (native, builtin)

msxml3 (native)

oleaut32 (native, built in)

riched20 (native, built in)

now, i also installed wine from the ubuntu repository and the sword installation was the latest one, i did not upgrade any version. not sure if this is of any help, but the sword module is working quite well, full search functions, highlight etc. although, i do not use the sword module download etc.

hope it helps,

cheers

OTOH, Greek and Hebrew font issues are as likely to be due to defects in the resource, as due to the effects of running e-Sword under WINE.

jonathon

I have the same problem (vowel pointings in hebrew being off) in ubuntu 10.10, 11.04, 12.04, and in Mint 15.  However I don't have that problem with windows installations of esword.

I also have a problem with being able to change the font of the english bible in linux.  No matter what font i choose, it still looks the same - default linux font.

I also have some Bible modules in south Indian languages which work well in windows, but are gibberish in linux.  Any suggestions?

Nathan

Hello Nathan,

First, please see the two posts just before your's about DLL's. The default fonts for Hebrew and Greek in e-Sword are Titus Cyberbit Basic Fonts. Check to make sure these fonts are installed. If not, do a Google search, and you can download free fonts to install. Check to make sure these fonts are chosen in your "Options - Fonts" for Greek and Hebrew. I hope this helps you.

Thanks for replying, but I'm not sure how to tweak the stuff in wine as padeco was suggesting.  I know with the dll's I need to download them, and install them in the system32 file.  I do have cyberbit.  However I will make the observation that no matter what font I choose, even in the english versions, it always looks the same.  Maybe the font isn't changing?

Nathan

Is there a workaround on kjv+ bible to get the strongs tooltip popup to display?  The popup displays on commentary and topic notes.  Anytime I mouseover the kjv+ strongs number it does not popup but when I mouseover on commentary or topic it popsup fine.

I might of missed it somewhere.  If someone could point me in the right direction?

Im using ubuntustudio 13.10 64bit

wine 1.4.1

winetricks --version 20130629

e-sword installed under x86

Everything else seems to work fine except the popup on Strongs when using kjv+

Did you try any of the suggestions in posts 31 and 32 above?

I'm sorry that I was unable to help you. I'll keep my eyes open for answers.

Please don't be sorry (6 year ago poster :-) ), because your post just helped ME understand how to use the e-Sword module downloader properly. I fid not know I had to go up to the Download menu AFTER clicking the modules I want to download. I had always assumed it was a WINE problem since normally when you see a list of downloads, they are already in progress. Thanks so much for your post!

Oh, and BTW, Silverhair's instructions at the top of this thread still work great in getting e-Sword 11.0.6 running under WINE 4.0 running through PlayOnLinux on Makulu Linux - Flash edition, built on 2019-01-25.  Yes, I know all that was a mouthful. The only thing I had to install "old" was e-Sword 11.0.6, as the current 11.2.2 e-Sword version crashes on me under this particular concoction of Linux and WINE.

Blessings, all!

So I decided to install Wine and run the PC version of e-Sword on my Mac running OSX 10.12.6 Sierra instead of the eSword X version (more accessible layout, less clicking around, more modules available, etc...just personal preference)

Successfully installed Wine, the Stable 4.0 version

Successfully went to the e-Sword website, dowloaded the e-Sword PC version 11.22

Successfully (I thought), ran the "setup1122.exe" file through Wine.  It went very smoothly, ran the Install Wizard, finished installing. Great!  (for those of you wondering, apparently this is the latest/only version available for download from the e-Sword website?)

then.... I could not for the life of me figure out how to actually run e-Sword from there!  Two files were installed on my desktop but neither of them will execute:

e-Sword.desktop     (appears to be a terminal file?)

e-Sword.Ink

Things I've already tried:

  1)  neither file will open when I click on them. Error message says "no application set up to run this file"

  2) running a command line from Wine  in Terminal:   wine e-sword.exe   (doesn't work, says it can't find the path)

  3) searching for where the program files were installed (can't find any. A Spotlight search for .exe  doesn't bring up any e-sword files)

  4) tried dragging and dropping the files onto the Wine program, but it wouldn't accept them

So where the heck is this thing?  And how do I run it?  It "pretended" to install the setup1122.exe file and the wizard ran just fine.....Suggestions?   where do I go from here?

Note:

e-Sword X v6.2 is already installed prior to this and I didn't uninstall it because it's a paid-for program through the AppStore.  But not trying to run it through WINE anyways.

Thanks in advance
