Is there a limit on the number of tags a resource can have? If so, leave only the last tag as an "open" tag; the rest could be "closed" tags.

I forgot to say: IPBoard supports 2 types of tagging. An OPEN system and a CLOSED system. The Closed system is what you see above. The user must select from a list of predefined tags.

An OPEN system lets the user type-in whatever they want. The upside is this is more flexible. The downside is it's too flexible--by spelling or spacing a tag differently, we would have two (or more tags) that should be one tag.

I thought about making it a Closed system at first to help us implement tagging on existing resources (make sure we use the same tags). And then later opening up the tag system and the moderators would have to follow up on new uploads to make sure the upload uses existing tags (and doesn't create new ones when a new one isn't necessary). I'm not sure ... just wanted to let yall know the OPEN/CLOSED system.

Hi Josh,
Something else I think you might need to consider. There are many who may upload stuff and really don't know what tags should be put in. Stuff like the obvious ones s8uch as Bibles, Commentaries and etc are probably no brainers. But, where one has to categorize topic notes by tags, that can be more difficult and quite daunting. How is one, who really has no idea as to what goes where, determines something as Bible Theology, Practical Theology, or Sermons, and etc. Its when things become difficult and complex I seem to notice not many really tag the resources.

So I guess that Closed system seems to be a good idea as this would give a uniform method of finding other works in a particular field of study. The Open system tends to become fraught with problems where those who place a tag, and then when one clicks on it, doesn't find anything that will match it.

Of the examples you show, I tend to think the way you have it at on the F.B. Meyer download page is really good. I think categories and sub-catagories such as:
  • Hermeneutics/Exegesis
  • Apologetics
  • Theology
  • Systematic Theology
  • Pastoral Theology
  • Theology Proper
  • Practical Theology
and etc would be of a great help. This would also include the different kinds of dictionaries that we have, to show whether they are lexical, theological or something else. The kinds of Bible Commentaries also would need to be categorized as well because some are devotional and whilst other are expository e.g., BBC, BKC, or exegetical, e.g., Vincent' Word Studies, Robertson's Word Pictures and etc.

Note:BBC (Believer's Bible Commentary) and BKC (Bible Knowledge Commentary) are an e-Sword premium modules and only mentioned to show the category.

I know this, to try currently find a resource without knowing what its about, of what category of study it belongs to, is really a nightmare, and so with this, I think it would be really great to in have an array where everything is indexed to its topic and category.

You really are doing a great job mate.

Blessings,
Stephen (Php 1:21).

I'm thinking we'll go with a Closed System, but I'll leave a free-form field where a user can type. We (moderators and I) will have to keep a close eye on uploads anyway. When we find a free form entry, we'll add it to the list of tags if we agree, and move the entry out of the free form field.

I don't see any point in tagging resources as "topics" or "commentary". We already have those as general categories, so nothing is gained by replicating that same word in a tag.

The bold print terms would be the high level tag categories on the Downloads portal page (left side near "e-Sword Categories"). The sub category tags would be collapsed under the bold print tags (but expandable, just like the category system works on the Downloads page currently).

Here's one stab at the tag list. The "...ology" words under Theology are words few people really understand, I thought about using the term in parenthesis instead or both terms with one in parenthesis.

Josh,

No offense meant, but I think it would be best if you alphabetize the sub-sections. Some might thing you are biased by putting Baptist, Southern Baptist (is there really that much of a difference?), Methodist, Catholic... Alphabetical is the way to go to keep people from trying to nit-pick at how you are trashing their religious beliefs by putting theirs at the bottom of the list.

Just a jumble suggestion.

I think "Practical Theology" would be better stated as "Christian Living." And it would be easier for most visitors to understand what is contained therein. Again, them's just my 2 mites' worth.

Hey Brad, yeah I was editing while you were replying and I had deleted the baptist division.

The order is pretty much the order I wrote or copied them down in, not in their final display order. I would think the sub-category tags should be alphabetized too. Or we could sort the tags according to the number of resources with that tag. But the bold category tags may be shown in the order we think are the most popular (or again, sort according to the number of resources tagged). That's easy to change later anyway.

Good feedback, thank you and it definitely gets us to thinking about how to sort the lists.

Add sorting by number of tagged resources instead of alphabetical

Tagging has been implemented. I've coded a back-end administrative interface for my admins to view all, edit, and create tags.

Hierarchical Purity
I decided to sacrifice hierarchical purity for ease of use. For example, the tag "rapture" would really be apart of "Eschatology". But if you notice, even most Bible software companies stay away from many of the "...ology" words because most end users don't understand many of them. So for now we're including the formal "...ology" types of tags, and also the more common words that are logically a subset of other tags.

Bookshelves / Tag Browser Location
What I originally called a Tag Browser has been renamed to Bookshelves. There are category tags (or bookshelves), and when you click on them, they expand to show all the tags that belong to that category.
Attached File  tag_location.png   51.82K   828 downloads

After we have a useful number of resources tagged, I'm going to move the Bookshelves block to the top of the left column on the Downloads page.

Note on Tag Display: Tags are only shown if they have been used--if no resources make use of a tag, that tag is not shown (why have the user wade through a list of tags with "0"s?). The category tags do display regardless of the number of tags.

Note on Tag Sorting: The top level tag categories are sorted by the admins--we can control their display order. But when you click a tag category to view the tags, they will be listed according to tags with the most resources.

The above to two decisions should resolve any "why is my denomination (or favorite topic) at the bottom of the list" questions. Tags only appear if they have resources available and then they will be sorted by the number of resources for that tag. Problem solved.

Adding (or Editing) Tags to Files You Upload
If you believe we do not have the right tag for your resource, or you feel you have a better one, you can Suggest a Tag.
Attached File  tagging_upload.png   33.45K   49 downloads

Also notice you can select a tag from the File Tags drop-down menu. We put *** divisions between the tag categories to "break-up" the list of tags. This way, it's easier for the human eye to see the list of tags.

Viewing Tags on the File Display Screen
Resources can contain more than one tag. Eventually, most of our resources will look like this:
Attached File  tagging-example2.png   62.05K   29 downloads

List of Current Tags:
This is a screenshot from the Admin's section with tall the tag categories expanded. This shows the total list of tags (most do not yet show in the Bookshelf/Tag Browser block described above because tags only appear if they resources use the tag). We'll add more as we move forward:

There's a bug I'm working on. IPBoard will let us define tags with ( ) in them but not display tags with parenthesis if the text in the parenthesis has a space.. So I'm going to remove all () from the tags or spaces between the (). Isn't it always something? Now resolved...

I really need to pay attention to the dates on some of these topics. This showed up as a 'hot' topic on my list for some reason.. duh..
