This book is antagonistic toward Catholicism and speaks from a non-sympathetic, Protestant view, lacking basic understanding of Catholicism's basic beliefs and structure. It's basically a Protestant attacking a straw-man version of Catholicism, since their fallacious arguments do not encompass Catholicism's true stance or approach to the various issues that are found when one considers theological questions.

Bottom line: Not the book to read if you wish to really understand Catholicism and why the Catholic church is the only truly descendent church directly from Jesus Christ.

Haters keep on hating. We pray for you to one day see the light :)

The one true church which has descended from the apostles is made up of every individual who has been born from above through the Word of God which lives and abides forever.  I used to believe the RCC was the one true church that descended from the apostles, until I actually read the Bible and studied church history.  Jesus is building His Church.  He is the head of the Church (Col 2:19).  He is still with us, even to the end of the age.

The RCC being the one true church is a myth that is not supported by history or the Bible.  It is a fabrication.

I do not hate Roman Catholics (I used to be one), but millions are led astray by this false hierarchical system and false doctrines mixed with the pure Word of God.  The Roman Catholic church was a pride issue for me.  I used to defend this same idea.  I wanted to believe the denomination I was a part of was the right one.  I believe there are many who love and know Jesus in this system and they know Him in spite of the system.  However, this system is going to be judged for its pride and arrogance... claiming to be something which it is not.

2Tim3:13 But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived. 2Tim3:14 But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, 2Tim3:15 and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

I was lied to by the RCC priests and teachers.  I was taught deliberate falsehoods and fabrications.  I trust no human organization.  I am assured that the scriptures are from God.  I place my confidence and trust in Him and His Word.  The scriptures make us wise for salvation, not the RCC.

Blessings,

Peter

This module is a classic pump and dump. The text appears to come from archive.org - but with no citation as to its origin, it is impossible to definitively say. Scripture references are not tooltipped.

This book is published on the Jack Chick website, so the content is conservative and evangelical. It is copyrighted 1995; but the archive.org version says that it is reproduced there with permission. The copyright permission statement in the module is less clear.

Those interested in an evangelical review of these Catholic doctrines will find good information; the formatting of it, though, will be substandard.

Hey rosc --

You wrote:"It's basically a Protestant attacking a straw-man version of Catholicism, since their fallacious arguments do not encompass Catholicism's true stance .... Bottom line: Not the book to read if you wish to really understand Catholicism"

Which book(s) would you recommend?

Hi Pete,

Like you I once was an RC. In fact as a kid I was an alter boy. Just about anything and everything was Roman Catholicism for me. Going to Mass was never just a Sunday event for me. I was well and truly locked into that system.

What began as a journey of belief in that system was totally ruined by the Parish Priest of that time, and I began to see the two faced attitude of some of the clergy of which resulted in me becoming disillusioned. When, as a teen at 17 I joined the Army, and on that day I took on being an atheist. The rest of this can remain unsaid.

After having done my stint in the NZ Army, and when I was in my late 20s I became a follower of Jesus, and never regretted having done so.

Blessings,

Yes, this is a typical attack on a straw-man Catholicism, full of DISTORTIONS, outright FALSEHOODS and, ironically given the title, basic MISunderstanding of both Catholicism and the Bible from almost the very first page.

"The Bible declares that IT is the one and only final authority," Jones says.  Really?  Where exactly does it say that?  It does not, anywhere.

On the contrary, the Bible tells us clearly that NOT all of Our Lord's teachings were written down in the Bible.  John tells us "many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book" (20:30, KJV).  And again: "This is the disciple which testifieth of these things, and wrote these things: and we know that his testimony is true. And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen" (21:24-25).

Jones thinks his claim that "The Bible boldly declares that IT is the only final authority" is proven by John 17:17: "Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth."

It's not.

Contrary to what Jones argues, "the word" is not synonymous with written Scripture.  Paul makes clear that "the word" is found in both Scripture AND Tradition: "Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle" (2 Thess. 2:15, KJV).

Jones's whole anti-Catholic approach is dishonest and relies on the manipulation of Scripture.

Jones writes, "The Apostle Paul advises Bible readers how they should react to those who teach doctrines contrary to God's **written** Word," and cites Romans 16:17-18:

"Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ . . ."

Can you show me where the word "WRITTEN" appears in those verses?  No, because it does not.  Read Jones's first chapter and you will see that Jones ADDS the word "written" over and over to twist Scripture to say what it does NOT say.  In other words, he lies.

Again:

"Paul admonishes true believers to avoid anyone who teaches doctrines contrary to the **written** Scriptures. He also reveals the consequences of believing such false teachings:

'But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.'
Galatians 1:8

"Then Paul immediately repeats himself:

'As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.' Galatians 1:9

"Thus, when Catholic doctrine contradicts God's **written** Word, those who side against the Holy Scriptures will be 'accursed.'"

Again, the word "written" does not appear anywhere is these Scriptures.  Paul is NOT referring to the WRITTEN word, and Jones knows it.  Paul could not have been referring to the written Gospels, because they were not written down for decades to come.  Paul is crystal-clear that he is referring to PREACHING -- oral preaching, the preaching of Our Lord, that He gave the authority to his disciples to PREACH throughout the whole world.  Our Lord did not say go throughout the whole world and give them the written Scriptures that I have written.  As far as we know, Our Lord did not write down a single word.  So why did His word not disappear from the face of the earth before it was written down in the Gospels?  Because of the TRADITION that He passed on to the disciples, and they to us, in an unbroken succession back to Our Lord Himself.  How did He pass down that Tradition?

Through His Church, "the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth" (1 Tim. 3:15, KJV).  Not 29,000 "churches," each of which interprets Scripture according to their own whims. Through His Church, singular.  Our Lord promised us that He would be with us "always, even unto the end of the world" (Mt. 28:20), through His Church, "the pillar and ground of the truth," and that "the gates of hell shall not prevail against it" (Mt. 16:18).  And He has kept His promise!

Finally, please ask yourself:

If your believe in Scripture alone, Where does your Bible come from?  WHO determined which books are in the Bible you read?  Why are the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John in the Bible and the "Gospels" of Thomas, Philip, and Judas are not?  That question was decided by the Synod of Rome and Pope Damasus (382), and the local Councils of Hippo (393) and Carthage (397).  Even Martin Luther was forced to admit that the Bible comes to us from the Catholic Church and nowhere else.  Catholics are often accused of "adding" books to the Bible.  No.  Martin Luther THREW OUT books that had been part of the Bible for 1000 years because they did not support his NEW doctrines.  Ironically, Jones cites Revelation: "If any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book" (22:18-19).

We Catholics accept Protestants as our brothers and sisters in Christ.  Maybe you have been taught otherwise, but that is the teaching of the Catholic Church.  But we know that the Fullness of the Faith is found only in the Church that Jesus Christ Our Lord founded, the "pillar and ground of truth," the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church.

“There are not one hundred people in the United States who hate The Catholic Church, but there are millions who hate what they wrongly perceive the Catholic Church to be.”  -- Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen
